Windows Media Center / Dragon's Lair & Space Ace
« on: September 04, 2005, 06:48:19 pm »
Here's something you may or may not be aware of...

I purchased the DVD versions of Dragon's Lair / Dragon's Lair II / Space Ace in a box set put out by Digital Leisure from Best Buy about a year ago.  Those games - to this point - were only controllable via your DVD remote.

Tonight, I decided to try and find a way to use them in my cabinet that would "hide" the DVD control by making it appear as if buttons, trackball, etc. on the control panel are in charge of the action.

ANYWAY...here's what I discovered.  If I use Windows Media Center to run the DVD,  it is already programmed to recognize I-PAC signals as the up, down, left, right and fire buttons.  In other words, I can use the player one joystick to control Dirk, and the player 3 button for his sword!  To make matters even more fun, I copied the DVD onto my hard drive so I don't have to keep opening the cabinet door to change discs.

You guys may have known all this, but it was pretty cool to figure it out myself!!

That's pretty neat.. but, if I were you.. I'd use Daphne (and the associated DVD ripping tool) to rip the files to your HD and play the games the RIGHT way.

How do I get Daphne to recognize what is ripped, since the disc is copied to the HD? Or can I? When I tried downloading their tool it kept coming up site not found.

Sorry, when it gets this deep I'm really not that bright, I suppose.  That's  why I was glad to discover the above!!

Ok, I deserve a whipping for wimping out...but I'd tried Daphne before and couldn't get it to work.

I had also not been able to find a DVD2Daphne link that worked...and that seemed to be the heart of my problem. To make a long story very short.

1.) I found a DVD2Daphne link that actually allowed me to download the program

2.) I converted the DVDs I purchased from Best Buy to a format Daphne recognized.

3.) I now have Dragon's Lair up and running, in sync, with sound, score the whole bit on my first try!

Dream, no WONDER you encouraged me to do that. Thanks!

Excellent!  I'm glad you discovered the wonders of Daphne!  It really can't be beat.  It can be a bit of a pain to setup (although it doesn't sound as if you had much trouble after you found the programs)... but, once you have it running, it's as good as you're going to get besides Time Warping back to the arcade glory days.
