A boot disk.  It'll do anything.

...

jokeing, but yeah, a commercial boot disk should alow you to play imports.

boot disks are too much fuss, would prefer to just be able to plop in the game like normal

Are we talking Japanese shmups? If so; there are some multigame disks floating arround that I can't tell you in the thread where to get them due to infringment policies. These discs are pretty cool they have multiple new Japanese titles on a single disc. The games are selectible via menu selection. THere are Japanese puzzle multi disc, etc as well.

If you are just asking in general then check out tutorials like this one or the utilities available from that site.

Shumps?

Shoot em ups... most of the newer games released on the Dreamcast in Japan lately  have been shooters. Trizeal , Chaos Field, Shikigami No shiro 2, etc...

Yeah games like Virtua On and the like with dedicated controllers really need the dedicated controller to truly appreciate them.

there are other games that have their own dedicated controllers? i know virtual on for the saturn and DC need their own (differnt) controllers, and that there are a couple of xbox and loads of GC games that require their own controllers, but i thought virtual on was the only one for DC

Another one that comes to mind is Dance Dance Revolution... surely this is more fun with the dance pad than with a control pad.

Puyo Puyo Da! is another dance one, Samba De Amigo had the maracas, tons of fishing games, and lets not forget Pop'n Music started out on the DC with its own controller (again most of these are japan specific games).

In answer to the original question, get a modchip if they're still available.  I got one back in the day for mine, and it's much nicer than messing with a swap disc for playing imports.  At the time they didn't allow play of backups, but there may be some now that do (haven't looked into it).  The install was considered tough by the standard of the time, but wasn't that bad...  By today's modchip install standards it's probably a piece of cake.

yeah, i have heard the latest ones only require the soldering of 4 wires, hmm, ill have to look into that.

ah yes, i forgot about those infernal dance mats, heh, me and a friend once used one of those on the playstation to play a track and field game, damn its tirering (and embaressing!)
