Do you still PLAY sports?
« on: July 26, 2005, 12:15:03 pm »
Just curious... we're nearly all guys here.  I'd imagine a large % of us played at least one sport through high school, as most guys do.  How many folks here still play a sport in some competitive fashion?  Toss out the sport, the level of competition, and your age (if you want) for reference...

I play tennis occasionally. Not competively, just my wife and I on the local public courts. 35 for the age reference.

I ran track through college, my main event was the 400 hurdles.  I'm 28 now and am  not in the shape I once was but I still run in 5k's when I have the time.  I have been contimplating training for a marathon, but deep down I am really a short distance runner so I have a hard time mentally with longer runs and races.

Wife and I occasionally go out and shoot hoops on rare occasion.. also toss the baseball around for a few hours with some of the neighbor kids.... and yes, even toss a frisbee around sometimes...  I'm a bit slow for dodgeball and there are no really good volleyball nets around anymore (can't set one up on the apt property.. too much trouble to set up and take right back down)

Not much of a jock anymore. In high school I played Football and was on the wrestling team(235lb class). 3 of the 4 years we went to division playoffs. Was never good enough to play college ball. I am only 5'10 and haven't grown in any direction other than out since high school.  ;D

Currenlty the only sport I participate in is an adult softball league.

I play a lot of tennis and skate and snowboard occasionally.  Every once in a great while I play soccer, but I'm not really any good other than being pretty fast.  I'm 26.

edit: not to mention Fifa 2005, Tony Hawk Underground, Top Spin, Burnout 3 (if you consider racing a sport), and GTA: San Andreas (where I often kill cops for sport).

Tennis seems to be a popular answer.  Well, I played tennis in high school.  I hung up my racquet while I went to college, but since then I play 1-2 times per week and I'm on a competetive league during the summer.  I'm 25.

The only sport I did was track(all three seasons) my senior year in HS.

I've run off and on over the past few years.  I've completed 2 marathons(26.2 miles) oct/02 & oct/03 but my times weren't very impressive 4:30 & 4:02 mainly because I didn't train enough.

I play baseball (on a softball field so we get more homeruns) with a bunch of friends from High School every sunday so everyone's skill level varies from bad to really good, I'm in the middle.

Currently I'm training for an Adventure Race in September, it's like a triathlon but in the woods (trail running, mountain biking, kayaking, and navigation. Total miles, 22-28 )

Age = 29

There are a few books on the subject.
Go to http://www.genesisadventures.com/
They have one day camps and "sprint" races (4 or less hours) in the MA/NY/CT area.  Or if you want to pay a lot of $$ there are longer camps in ME or GA.
Also http://www.racingahead.com/ has some info.

I learned about them years ago, from the Eco-Challenge (Mark Burnett show pre Survivor)  Now a lot of ski mountains are having them since it gives them something to do in the summer.

It's a team based sport.  Sprints are usually teams of two, the longer races are teams of 3.  I've never done one so my friend and are just going to jump on in.

I play a lot of softball.  And just about anything else that comes about.  Last month my buddy talked me into the Rachel Carson hike.  Thirty five miles of hell near Pittsburgh.  It was motivating though.  I'm 26.

The only thing I still play that I have always played is softball.  Since high school I have been playing raquetball and golf.

Only thing I play competitively now is basketball.  A "practice" league from Labor Day through middle of June, and a weekly prison league during the same time frame.

I used to play Volleyball B-level league (usually 4-man teams is what it means around here, A-Level are the 2 man teams, C-level are 6-man teams, and D-level are 6+ mixed casual leagues) and football, fall league flag version, raquetball (no Snuffy Smith or anything like that, but decent enough to place top 10 in a few tourney's).

I screwed up my knee (tore every tendon PLUS a dislocated kneecap) playing volleyball and stopped almost EVERYTHING because I can't make the "cuts" like I need to.  I started playing golf more often, which I've played in informal leagues.

35 - and I miss playing volleyball. :'(

I'd like to play golf and think I'd enjoy it, despite it's unenvironmentalfriendliness, but it's just so damned expensive.  I can stomach the initial investment in a set of clubs, expensive as they are.  But the charges to get onto a course are prohibitive -- especially for someone who has never played.

The combination of not knowing how to play, having very little free time and the cost of going to a golf course make me unable to justify the cost of a set of clubs.  Learning how to play might make the prices charged by golf courses a little more palatable, but the lack of a set of clubs pretty much rules out that possibility.  Catch-22.

Baseball still.... In a 27 and over league.  I'm 35 and I think the knees are starting to go (I still catch) but I love it.

It's competitive, guys still throw in the 80's, we have a lot of ex pro and semi-pro, and college guys that play.

Is that the game where you stand a few yards away from each other and try to take each others' heads off with a frisbee?

At least that's the game I saw being played that I'd equate that to....oh, and dunno if you guys have to do this, but these guys played the "drink in hand" rule.  I like playing bocce and croquet with "drink in hand" rules.  You haven't truly laughed your ass off until you see your drunk friend hammer his bare foot with a croquet mallet (missing the ball) because he was "smart" enough to catch someone hitting in clear violation of said rule.

The only 'sport' I played in highschool was called 'Throw the tennis ball at Frank, up on the bleachers' - for some reason Frank didn't seem to mind this at all.*

After highschool I got into Road Cycling, though not competitive I would do the local Time Trial every now and then to judge my fitness level. After a few years of that I picked up a Mountain Bike, and pretty much left the roads for short rides or commutes. I don't ride as much as I used to, but still enjoy a day on the trails when I can.

I'll go you one better.  Usually SOME summer holiday results in a party at my brother-in-law's house.  He lives DIRECTLY across the street from a park, and he's on a semi-cul-de-sac, so VERY few cars come by, and the park is mainly used by the small contingent of neighborhood kids.

A sample of the shots called this year:

"HAS to hit the bouncy pads first, then hit the stairs going up the slide"

"Has to go UP the corkscrew slide" (with the resulting shoot-off-the-top-of-the-slide)

"Off the swing seat over the trash can"

"Off the picnic table down the path" (down the friggen path that leads to the drainage culvert....and the balls slowly float down until everyone's thrown"

Want some real fun?  Find yourself a set of the light-up bocce balls and play the same way.  Oh, and farthest from the p-whatever-it's-called ball has to carry the cooler to the next shot.  Taking your turn with no drink in hand is automatic cooler for 5 shots

It should be noted that bocce is a game, not a sport.  I would go farther to say any activity that you can hold a beer while playing is not a sport.

My family had a Bocce set when I was a kid and we would always play at family get togethers. When I lived in Argentina, all the old men would play Bocce at the local neighborhood bocce court (every park had one, which was about every 5 - 10 blocks). They would just about keel over and die when I would play with them. I guess bocce is an old mans sport there. I was around 20 at the time.

I still love that game.

I would go even farther to say any activity that you can't hold a beer while playing, isn't worth playing.

I'm 28 and almost 100 pounds overweight....but I decided to pick up skateboarding this year with some of my co-workers.  It's not a sport, but the same kind of thing.

I'd consider it more of a sport than stuff like golf!

I was never into the "stick & ball" sports in school. I tried soccer, and it was OK, but I wasn't into hanging around school after it let out (thats what arcades were for!). Never had a real interest in mainstream pro sports. Was big into skateboarding, BMX and dirt bikes. Haven't been on a skateboard for a very long time, but still have a dirt bike and occasionally ride the mountain bike.
It's been tougher since my daughter was born. When she gets a little older and has a bicycle, I can see getting back into riding with her.
