New project...well sort of
« on: July 28, 2006, 07:51:15 pm »
Salutations! Well a little over a month ago I purchased the Project Arcade book and began brainstorming. The heart of the project began about 3 weeks ago and has been progressing nicely. I'm following the plans more or less to the "T" so anyone familiar with the book or the Lusid plans should have an idea of what the cabinet will look like. I've decided to use artwork from WWF Superstars. Always been one of my favorites (next to Wrestlefest which classicarcadegrafix.com doesn't have sideart for :( so I had to compromise a bit). To date all of the wood is cut sans the holes for the speaker shelf. Everything is primered, the T-molding slots on the cabinet sides are cut, and the base is built. Now construction can finally begin. I just ordered a marquee retainer and bezel from Happs. I'm putting in a 27" Sharp TV as the monitor and I have to say that the picture is superb on S-video. I'll upgrade to component one day. I opted for a pre-built control panel (to save time and headaches. I'm in the early process of moving) and went with the Devastator II from Treyonics. I've had no problems so far except that the screws holding the Player 1 joystick came loose completely the other night after a heated and intense game of MK III with my girlfriend!!! I quickly fixed the problem by tightening the nuts onto the screws again and decided that to ensure this won't happen again that longer screws are in order. As of now the nuts on the screws are flush with the bottom of the screws so I can see why they came loose. I'll get some longer screws and add some washers to hold them on better. I promise to have some pics up here soon even if they merely show the final (hopefully good if not excellent) results. Hats off to Ken (my girlfriend's father) who has helped tremendously every step of the way and to Ashley (my girlfriend) who has put up with my constant talk about the project since it's inception. And last but not least to anyone here who has offered advice to my nagging questions. There's a guy who lives in my stomping grounds who has been very helpful and friendly. Thanks Greg! I've still got a ways to go but I wanted to fill anyone in who's interested. Pics to follow soon. Duty Now For The Future!

Construction has begun!  ;D The sides are secured to the base and the top has been put on as well. We marked out where the monitor shelf will go. It took some time to figure out how to properly angle the shelf according to the dimensions of my TV. But I'm starting to feel better now. Everything seems to be coming together. Pics to follow soon...I promise damn it.

Here's the pics of my cabinet from start to finish. I went with Mortal Kombat II art in lieu of the WWF Superstars. One pic at a time... Comments? Be gentle.

Hey! I can now say I've seen your cab! Looks good. Nice job on the artwork!

We gotta get a gaming weekend or evening between the two of us. That would be sweet.

Looks very clean, maybe it's just me, but are your speakers lacking grills???

A closeup pic of your speakers?

BTW: Great work!

Cabinet looks good and clean. Kinda weird to see a MKII cab with a SF layout.

I imagine there aren't many comments because there aren't a lot of pictures. Just in progress shots that pretty well describe where you are. Don't think much of it. Most of us are in this hobby to build a cabinet to play games, not to get praise from other builders.

Also, it seems that as this hobby progresses, cabinets that don't do much out of the ordinary don't get a lot of attention. Enjoy your cabinet.

Don't feel bad. My thread only had a couple of replies from Timoe. It was only a desktop though, so no big surprise there. Here's the thread:

The arcade community seems to enjoy lurking.

You'll get lots of reads and relatively few replies. No biggie. The best praise is friends that come over to play it!

While it is a kick to get praise for your project, it is the advise I prefer.  I've received more responses when I pose specific questions.  'What do you think?' is not nearly as good as 'do you like A or B?'

It's also a kick when you give someone an eye-opening piece of advice that they appreciate.  I'm sure some people have thought 'no-duh' to some of my posts, but occasionally I've truly helped someone out.  As long as we don't get pissy when someone gives obvious or even dumb advice, posts in this forum will thrive.

BYW...I'm just as guilty as the next guy for lurking.
