Well it was a two man rush.  Dan is busy with the real world and I'm busy with partially the real world and my various other projects.  Sounds like someone else needs to step up and start making models.

I love the front ends and want to help with models, I have been learning 3D Max little by little over the last month. I started on a Midway Demolition Derby upright. I have it coming pretty good but haven't  figured out how to do the monitor and bezel yet. I haven't spent much time on rendering, animating, or lighting yet. I need to get some books on director also. So much to learn, so little time. Does the size of the model matter? I have set up my grid by inches and have matched the model to my game.  I looked at a couple of your Max files, and the scale is different. Do I need to start over for it to work in the arcade?  Thanks for all your work, it's great.

-yes the scale is different i had my max setup in centimeters when i started. i should have used generic units. but one simple scale from inches to centimers will do it. or you can  one of the existing models and merge your model in it. then remove the original after you resized yours.
-for bezels i use png images with an alpha channel. they won't show up correct in max 4 the alpha will be grey but will export correctly.
-look at one of the existing models you will see that all parts are grouped together and then the marquee and montiro are the first two parts. that is required. you get that easily by giving them names like aamarquee, amonitor and then a select by name...select all...group.
-then it is ready to e exported to w3d...

Could we add a feature on the 3D models page at: http://3darcade.mameworld.net/models.htm

to get them listed by date-added as well?  Alphabetic sorting makes it somewhat clumsy to find which cabinets are new (although by no means am I  suggesting the alphabetic sorting be taken away).

I shall add the date from now on when I add or update models. no sorting that would mean changing the webpage too much and i have no time for that right now.

Actually the upcoming version of 3darcade could update the models automatically. because i added a feature for the online multiuser arcades to check your configuration and download stuff (arcade models, avatars, configuration files etc) that is needed or needs to be updated automatically...except the 3d cab models because some users will not be able to have all models in their models folder...

Well for a living I do all sorts of 3d animation and modeling and stuff.  So I'm messing with all sorts of 3d programs and would be interested in building some models.  But only if I had a database of plans to build them from.

The problem is we just don't have the exact dimensions for most cabinets. I tried to contact some collectors to see if they would be interested in taking measurements..but so far not much luck.

Do you have experience with character studio in max? There's in now full bones animation support in 3darcade. Some fun npg and avatars would also be a great addition. Or maybe some of those moving cabs. I hope to do a space harrier soon ;-)

As )p( said there aren't any plans to be had, just some really bad pictures.  If all you can do is exact drafting then your probably sol.  What we do is look a pics to get the profile and copy it directly with the program by placing the texture on a cube behind the spline we are making.  The width of the cab is the same on 90% of them so that's not a biggie.  Then I personally use something that's universal on the cabinet pics (like a coin door or buttons, ect)  to get a feel for the scale and match accordingly.  You would be suprised how accurate you can get just with that.

Saw this which may help (only height, width, and depth though)

wow!  never saw that before....

mixed results though

the good news is it has dimensions, the bad news is many of these cabs already have a model built

perhaps some day when i'm reaaaaaly bored i could convert the cab dimensions of all of my models though :)

thanks man

great link...there are some in there i did not have yet. for most of the cabs i've done i did have the h,w,d.  But for more accurate cabs more detailed measurements are needed. I got them for galaxian, mspacman, defender and centipede...but the models are not updated yet as i have not done any work on the models lately... if anyone who reads this has an original cab...take out your measurement tape ;-)

Thanks for the tips Peter. I have more work to do on it - like touch up the bezel, make steering wheels, and install the buttons and shifters. I renamed  the marquee and monitor like you said and exported it just to see if it works. It worked great. Now I need to rescale and finish it. It looks funny in there being about two thirds the size! As soon as I finish it, I'll send you the file. If you like it, I'll work on some others after that.

Yeah I have experience with Max.  Although it sucks in my opinion.  I work mostly with Maya.  I could make a model in Maya very fast and I can export an OBJ file which I believe Max will read in.  OBJ files are polygon information only though.  No textures or animation.  I could do some stuff in Max I just haven't touched it for a while.  Yeah I know what you guys are saying about just using images as backdrops to work off of.  That's an okay way to do it.  No one will really ever know the difference.  An idea is to contact some arcade's that sell their old school games online and ask them to take measurements.  Anyways I can probably help you guys out a bit if you need me.  Just email me. jakobud@lycos.com

Dan does all his works also in maya and then converts it to max format with deep exploration...this works pretty well as all shader and texture information will not be lost. Also there is a new w3d exporter for maya and as I have a copy of maya now we will see if we can also  export directly from maya as I was told the new exporter creates more compatible files...the old one was pretty weird...
