SNES Emulation
« on: November 26, 2002, 01:31:49 pm »
Hello,

I have my mame cab completely finished, and am now looking at adding SNES emulation.  I am new to that scene, and would like some opinions as to which emulator to use and which front end.  I am using winxp prof for the OS, and do not have a keyboard/mouse available.  Only the keys used for MAME are on the CP.  Any ideas or suggestions??  Thanks a lot!

Definately ZSNES.  It is an excellent emulator, and it gives you fully configurable keys etc.  You can run it with or without it's own GUI, and so it can be used with many frontends (eg MAMEWAH, Lazarus etc).

If you wish to use the escape key to quit game, you need to hex edit the ZSNES config file - a member here (sorry can't remember your name!) kindly figured out how to do it.  If you want to do this I made a note somewhere...

Get ZSNES at http://www.zsnes.com btw  :)

Ok I will use that.  Can you recommend a good front end that works in Windows that looks good?  I am using Arcade@Home for my mame frontend, and would like something similar to that.  Thanks again.

Try GameLauncher.  You can use it with any commandline-based emulator.  I use it with Mame, ZSNES, VirtualNES, Gens, MagicEngine, Daphne, etc....

Minwah I would be very interested in how the ESC key is mapped as exit in ZSNES. Can you post instructs?

I have downloaded gamelauncher, and it works fine for MAME, but I cant get it to work for ZSNESW.  It loads, shows my roms, then when I select one it switches screens for a split second to a black screen, then right back to the GL menu.  Here is my config:

[Emulator]

name = zSNES

description = Super Nintendo

directory = c:\snes\zsnes

executable = zsnesw.exe

global_options = -a -e -s -v 3 -p 90 -z

map_file = snes.map

options_before_rom = yes

screen_shot_directory = snes\shots

use_rom_file = no

rom_directory = snes\roms

rom_extension = smc fig

use_extension = yes

use_rom_directory = yes

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?  Thanks!

Here's how to get ZSNES to quit with the escape key:

1) You need a Hex Editor (I found one called XVI32)
2) Hex edit the file 'ZGUICFGW.DAT'
3) Change the value at address 200 decimal / C8 hex to '01' hex.
4) Quit and save the change

That's it!

Note that I didn't figure this out so I'm not taking credit, but I can't remember who did  :D

ZSnes is great, best one I have used. I have a Playstation 2 control hooked up thru a USB adapter and find that is the best way to play most snes games.
