Need PS2 Repair Service
« on: May 03, 2005, 01:32:41 am »
I have a fairly new PS2 unit (< 9 months old) that will read CDs but not DVD game or movie media.....infamous "Disc Read Error". It belongs to the son of a friend of mine.

His son had two units both with this problem. I was able to get one unit working.

I attempted to do the adjustments on this second, actually newer unit, following that same tutorial, stepping through several times with the same end result, ie: will not read DVD media.

Then after reading a suggestion in another forum, I phoned Sony support, reported the problem,  and was offerred a free exchange even though the unit was out of warranty *and* even though I reported the warranty seal had been broken..

Needless to say, now that several weeks have past, Sony has returned the original unit with a letter of disclaimer indicating they will not exchange the unit because the warranty seal has been broken.

Is there any member of these boards that perhaps is offering repair services for PS2 units?

Beyond the normal adjusting and cleaning, theres not much to do but replace lasers and crap.. its a few cables, and its not terribly hard..

off hand, i have no idea where to get parts anymore tho..  :-\

The only adjustment I undertook was the simple one where you can adjust the distance of the laser from the media.

I have not attempted any others up to this point but will certainly read the tutorial you referenced.

I thought laser adjustments (beyond the simple distance tracking adjustment) required an oscilloscope which I don't have.

Thanks alot daywane, I just ruined my PS2 following that tutorial!  >:(

I'm just playing.  Although I did ruin my PS2 following that tutorial...  :P

Well sorta.  I was reading the tutorial and was trying the adjustments of the white wheel thing that adjusts the height of the sled and that wasn't working so I figured I'd give the pot adjustment a shot.  Well, I wasn't quite sure where the pots where so I took the PS2's guts out of the bottom of the case and flipped it over into the top of the case.  When I did that I disconnected the controller/mem card ports from the motherboard so they weren't just hangin' there.  Well, I still couldn't figure out where the pots where so I put it all back together but I screwed up the connector to the ports in the process.  The damn thing just won't go in!  It keeps bending and crap!  It sure is a pain in the arse!

So anyways, it looks like I'll have to use just my xbox until I can afford/find a new ribbon cable or perhaps the whole assemble and while I'm at it I might as well get a new laser assemble because I'm pretty sure the one I've got is toast...

Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again

WOW  :o
never had much problems getting one apart and back together again.  :-[
the pots are under the drive. 2 round silver dials

to replace all you are talking about , It would be cheaper to get a new one.
I have fixed about 6 PS2 since we last talked  :-\

Cheaper to get a new one?  I took a look arround and I think I can get a new laser and ribon cable for <$70 shipped...  I realy would much rather fix the one I've got either way because it's got a dms3 in it it which I paid another $50 to have installed!   :o

I guess I just won't be able to play DDR or Pop'n Music for a while seing as though those are pretty much all my PS2 gets used for since I got my XBOX modded.
