Sideart Opinions - Marquees Added
« on: April 30, 2005, 03:27:58 am »
Hello,

I am planning on getting rid of my current MAME machine and building two in it's
place.  One will be horizontal and one will be vertical.  The horizontal machine will
be a scratch built Joust and the vert will be a scratch built Pac-Man.

I want the artwork to be indicative of the machine and era.

So here is my first attempt at the Joust Machine.

Thanks,

and go easy now.

UPDATE!

This is the artwork for the vertical pacman cab.

OK....

Forget the brocoli martini explosive bowling trophy idea.

WTF was I thinking.

How bout this.

I think it is much better and maintains that old school feel.

I like the second one better, the first one just kinda doesn't "make sense" to me, if you know what I mean.  I definitely like the small number of colors and old school feel to each of them.  The second one looks like something straight off of a classic game. :)

The second one has potential but shouldn't it be on your vert cab since 90% of shmups were vertical?  I like your choice of cabs to build btw, 2 very nice designs.

Well,

The idea is for the artwork to look like something that would be on that cab without neccessarily being a representation of the games played.  Maybe I should do something different on the second side.  Beat-un up or something.  Besides Defender is a shooter and it would be one of my favorite horizontals besides Joust but if I just put the Joust bird on the side it will kind of defeat the purpose.

Well,

I started with a mushroom cloud and then tried to work in a joystick handle and an arcade button.  I think with the fact that I am trying to stay with a limited color  pallete it just doesn't come across very well.  I also think I was trying too hard.  Usually the ones that come easy are better.  Plus I spent a little time on the sketch pad before I went to the computer on the second one.

hmmm...how about putting joust sideart on the joust cab, and pacman (or other game that comes in a pacman cab) sideart on the pacman cab?  i know this might seem obvious, but sometimes the most obvious answers are the most often overlooked.  also, where do you plan on getting full sideart printed?  i've looked around, and most printing companies friendly to the community seem to have pretty small limits for large peices of art.

I don't want stock artwork.  I am trying to go for that feel yet create something completely unique.

As far as printing goes I will be doing that myself.  I own a sign company and have two large format printers which will output 54" wide material.

I thought about and discussed some while back offering printing here on the boards but my shop is very busy doing vehicle wraps and signs and I won't offer a product here until I am sure I can provide prompt and exceptional service.

Once I get the artwork printed I will post here and see what you guys think of my capabilities.

If everyone likes than I may offer out my services on some kind of trade basis.  That way I can convince my wife that all the "nerd crap" coming UPS and FedEx isn't really costing that much.  ;)

well...i'd love to have some larger than usual neo geo sideart printed up, so it shouldn't be too hard to get printed.

Changed some colors and designed a new logo.

Not getting much feedback on this art.

Does it suck and I'm not seeing it?

I like the blue design. However swap the logo. The blue design logo is obscured by the "flash" the yellow design logo looks better.
I'm not a big fan of the character compilation designs, usually it is a clash of styles. I'd say go for the blue design.  :)

Personally I think that if you are a fan of the song and the characters/games you've incorporated, I think it's fine. I'd spend a little more time working on some of the special effects, but the designs themselves look good if you're a fan of them.

I'd say go for the blue design.  :)

Actually these designs are for two scratch built cabinets.  The blue artwork is for my Horizontal Joust style and the yellow is for my vertical Pac style cabinet.

I'd spend a little more time working on some of the special effects
Well I am trying to stay simple and somewhat period.  For example, just like defender and joust, I want to paint the design on the blue cabinet.  I will do a full color digital print one the Pac cabinet but am considering adding half tone effects to make it look screen printed.

I design logos & signs for a living and I know I could go crazy with bevel, glow, and other photoshop glitz but I want to try and keep the feeling of those early games.

I welcome any suggestions that are old school or as I said in keeping with the period.

Yeah... I wasn't too sure about the lyrics when I was younger either, especially that line.  Shoot me if ya want I love the song.

With thoose crazy nonsensical lyrics it's hard to believe it was written by the boss. (Bruce Springsteen for all you non children of the 80's)

I liked the simpler design for the horizontal cab better. Has a more old school feel about it with fewer colors. Think Defender, Joust, Berzerk, Sinistar etc.

I guess I could leave the logos off.  I will try that & Repost.

After all I will have marquees & bezels I can incorporate the logo there.

Looking better! One nit, though: the blue cabinet looks a little bit like there's Jiffy Pop popcorn coming out of the explosion, at least at this low resolution.

My $0.02, so take it for what it's worth.
