FREAKIN' Dog won't stop barking!!
« on: April 30, 2005, 12:34:57 am »
The dog in the apartment next to me has been barking NONSTOP for the past several hours. The bimbos that live there are out partying and won't be back until at least 2-3am.

I'm starting to feel like the Son of Sam, like it's trying to tell me something..."feed me poisoned ham!"...or something.

Anyhow, this has happened many times before, we've talked to the chicks, complained to the landlord and nothing has been done. I want to strangle the freakin' thing and wear it's fur as a suit!!

But besides that, anyone here ever have a similar situation? How did you remedy it?

I'm thinking Animal Control, but unfortunately they aren't open on weekends.

Wait! It's calling me again....must go.....obey!!!

Call the police..

If its late at night, they can and will take care of it..

then get them to write a report, take said report to landlord..

Repeat a few times..

Now the sluts dont have a home..

The police will stop back the next day to complete their report.  It'll be an "open" disturbance call until they speak with the women.

This is an easy fix for them, and clearly they could care less about how it affects others, and the welfare of their dog.  Since the landlord hasn't/won't take care of it to your satisfaction (the dog shutting UP!), the police are the next step.

This isn't an animal control issue, it's a nuisance/disturbance issue if it's beyond 10 P.M.

My dog used to do it when I left.  Leaving a radio or the television on may solve it, otherwise those chicks should be responsible pet owners and look to solve the problem their dog is having when they leave.

Give 'em the ol' "Red Foreman treatment" if all else fails.

I had a neighbor who actually did that to my dog because she crapped on the fence line and he thought it was a millimeter or so more on his side of that line.

She did it ONCE.

I'm thinking you're my old neighbor, or you thought you were being funny.  Either way, here's hoping someone visits a similar punishment upon you for suggesting something as insanely asinine as that and thinking you'd come off as Joe Cool.  Perhaps you could let me know when you're having your next party so I can come over and crap in your punch bowl.  I've heard that's a real scream too.

Well, I can't say I haven't thought about killing the thing. Seriously. It's such a loud, screaching yelp...it just gets inside your head. We can't use a good 75% of our apartment because the bark dominates the area and it's just driving us insane. It's 2am and we'll need a fan on in our bedroom in order to even sleep. We've done our part with these people, numerous time...I've been MORE than patient and this kind of crap really gets under my skin. Some people have absolutely NO respect for others.

I work all week (two jobs day and night) and I was looking forward to watching a movie with my lady tonight but we can't relax at all. So we finally called the police to discuss the issue, but since we live in a pretty rough neighboorhood, it isn't exactly a priority call on a Friday night. They said they couldn't even get the dog since it's INSIDE the apartment?! WTF. Anyhow, they recommended we call Animal Control during the week, if it happens again, since they have the authority to retrieve the dog from inside a home. Didn't make any sense to me, but we're going to follow-up with them anyhow and make a report to the police regardless.

Just to help myself feel better, I've left a note on their door outlining the problem, along with a recording of the dog barking, recorded from inside OUR apartment. I burned a full CD of that infernal noise, so they can personally enjoy the sweet sounds of their frickin' Devil Dog. I know they have absolutely no idea how loud and annoying it is since it stops as soon as it hears them approach the apartment. I burned a copy for the landlord too and filled his voicemail with "live" dog barking. I know he'll hear it, since I've done it before.

Btw, I've seen these bimbos "test" for the dog barking by going outside to their kitchen window to wave at the dumb animal. OF COURSE it doesn't bark when it sees them...so they most likely think the thing is a little angel when they're gone. I hate these girls...and their little dog too.

Here's a sample of the recording: [Mp3]

Note: Remember this is recorded from inside MY apartment. This is only a 20-30sec. sample, just imagine this repeated over a period of 3 hours, so far.

That's just unreal.  I played it three times in a row to see what you are dealing with and I am ready to shoot myself already.  Truly awful!

I have a dog in an apartment and we work soooo hard to make her happy.  It makes me crazy when people do this in their apartments because it makes it so hard for those of us that do it right to find a place to stay.

Like soapboy said, call the cops, let them get fined, repeat as needed.

No offense to "driving people"  but most of you suck too.

Dog people are good people.  I think we may have different deffinitoins of what a dog person is.  I go to dog parks regularly and no there would dream of acting like this.  The dog cultore is a considerate one.  If you see dog poo on the grass somewhere, rest assured that pet owner isn't a "dog person" but just some jerk with a dog.  Most pet owners aren't "dog people".

To me a dog person is someone who takes this stuff way too far - like me.  I have magazines and socialize with other pet owners the way we would about arcade games.  I am aware of teh rules of pet ownership and those that don't follow them.  That's what makes me a dog person.

Ya, I have a dog too. 11 year old lab. In fact, he's laying beside me now, takin' a rest (actually, sometimes I think he's a piece of furniture around here). He never barks. Why? Because we TRAINED him. Do we leave him outside during the weekend while we're away? No, we take him with us, or we leave him somewhere where he will be looked afrer.

You're right, there are those who are considertate of others, and those who are not. What are you to do?

I actually staked out my new place for a month making sure it was a good neighborhood, and that the people next door did not have a problem looking after a dog.

But Mr. C, if that keeps happening to you, I WOULD make their life a living hell. Maybe hammeing something every night on the wall that separates the two apartments. Or Maybe leaving your MAME cab on REAL loud while you're away. I bet Space Invaders would grate on someone after a long while.....

You are a "Dog Enthusiast" then..."Dog People" still suck.  :)

I can go with that.

But as for your problem I have another suggestion in tune with Jabba.  I used to make sound cue for plays when I was in college.  One time I was editing a wav of an old phone ring with my door open.  My dad came in crazy and looked like me like I peed in soup.  Get an old phone sound and blast it ringing when you leave the house.  They will go crazy.

Bring that CD to the landlord and give him a written letter.  Document the whole thing.  You should have some government office that deals with renters rights.  Call them and see what the deal is about getting out of your lease.  Give your landlord whatever info they give you and he'll have to make a decision about who he wants to stay.  The chicks with a wacked out dog, or you.  His only other choice is to make sure they do something to correct the issue.

I had animal control called on my dogs when I lived in a duplex.  Animal control will come over and see if the dog is barking.  If it is for longer than say ~5 minutes, then a ticket is issued.  It was funny when animal control came out the third time.  My dogs didn't bark, the neighbors dogs did.  I came home from work and filed a complaint on them.  They got a ticket for barking, no licenses and for having too many animals. :P

If you do anything to the dog, you'll go to jail (as anyone should).  Follow "the rules" and the problem will be solved in the next week.  No jailtime necessary. ;)

They need to get one of those electo-shocking collars. My friend's dog went on a barking spree a few months back so she got the collar. It sounded a little cruel, but we tried it out on ourselves to make sure the shocks were'nt too painfull; it starts with a mild shock, the shocks get harsher with repeated barking (or shouting if you've got it strapped around your own neck).
Now the dog only barks if there's something really wrong now, and I don't shout as much.

I live upstairs from an animal shelter. They only get dogs every couple of weeks, but I've learned to shut out the barking just like muting the wife's naggings.  ;)

CC,

Great advice. We're pretty much following this line of attack. I just talked with the landlord's assistant downstairs and it turns out the landlord is in "eviction mode", meaning our town is seeing an extreme influx of potential renters, so our landlord sees no need for keeping troublesome tenants around. Usually, as long as people are paying he doesn't seem to care whether their quality of life suffers. Sucks that it takes a change in the market for him to respond, but unfortunately, it's all about the money with him, as it is with most run-of-the-mill building owners.

OMG our nextdoor neighbor has two birds that go at it every evening for about 3 hours!  True, it's not exactly middle of the night keep you up annoying but it's pretty retarded to have to turn something on just to drown out the noise.  The thing that makes it the worst is that they're not doing anything wrong as far as the law and even the rules of the apartments go so there's absolutly nothing we can do.

I don't even see the point of owning birds, it's not like they pur or are even happy to see you when you get home.  Leave 'em all outside where they can fly free as they are meant to!

Many a time I have contemplated breaking in with a sheet and a can of carbon monoxide and taking care of the problem myself.  Unfortunatly, I have no idea where one would get a can of carbon monoxide...  :(

I sure hope that animal control thing works out for you though.  Have you ever seen that show on animal planet, it's called like animal cops or something stupid like that (my gf watches it).  They friggin take away like everyone's animals on that show.  Hopefully it's the same without the cameras!  ;)
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Come on guys, all these ideas about killing the dog or making your own noise even louder is crazy, handle it right .

I'm sure most people here are just being facetious when they suggest killing the dog with poisoned ham or bologna. Everyone knows dogs really prefer beef!!!

Take your recording and loop it to build up an hours worth of the dog's barking. Position your speakers close to an adjoining wall, and set the recording to repeat. Doesn't have to be loud, just enough that the dog can hear it. Leave for a few hours. The dog will do the rest.

Ideal time would be the morning after ther girls have been out partying and are trying to sleep off the hangover. ;)

...when animal control came out the third time.

Follow "the rules" and the problem will be solved in the next week.  No jailtime necessary. ;)

It certainly doesn't sound like your neighbors had much luck shutting your dogs up by following "the rules".

Mr. C.:

Any response from the Bimbos or the Landlord after getting the CDs?

The CD gesture wasn't going to be useful... the only way now is to get Animal Control over there.  If they can't control the dog they will have to get rid of it.

Actually the CD worked pretty well on the landlord...I walked down to his office and before he had time to say anything, I slipped it into his Bose CD-player and turned up the volume. I left it playing like that the whole time we discussed the issue. It drove him mad and he said he'd "take care of it", whether or not that means he's making them get rid of the dog wasn't very clear. If it happens again though, I'm pretty sure they'll be evicted.

The bimbos; not sure if they listened to it or not. I'm trying to avoid them because I don't think I can keep myself civil if I was forced to talk to them right now. Either way, I felt it was truly the only way I could ever attempt to show them how loud and annoying the dog is when they are gone. They have, however, been extremely quiet since receiving it...so who knows.

I've found in previous experiences that the offending tenant *NEVER* has any idea how loud they really are...and when I've been able to prove my point, it has worked to quiet them down. Like one dude who kept playing some ghetto-ass rap music. One day he had it exceptionally loud and I had him come stand in my apartment and listen to how his sub-woofer transferred the bass right into my office. I then pointed to my 4-foot tall Pioneer speakers and explained to him that I'd be more than happy to play some cracker-ass Death Metal for him throughout the day if he didn't quiet down.

People are generally pretty short-sighted, and their inconsiderate behavior is born out of ignorance; of how their actions effect other people. Landlords, as well, have very limited capacity for visualizing problems. For things that they can't readily experience themselves, it certainly helps to point things out with visual (photos) and/or audio proof.

Use the little soundboard device and play the barking back for them for a few hours.

Gah! This is why I hate apartments. I had nothing but loud inconsiderate neighbors the entire time I had to endure that. Now I live so far out in the country that my nearest neighbor couldn't disturb me even if they were trying.

Of course on the other side of that coin, when you live out in the boonies, you tend to adopt a lot of strays. Well at least you do if you're soft hearted like I am. So now my own dogs keep me awake at night sometimes. ;)

I had my own little incident this morning....

Decided I'd stay up the entire night (I usually go to bed around 4 or 5 am) so I could pay the rent to the apt manager when she got to her office first thing.  Around 7:30 am, my upstairs neighbor's high school kid decides to play something with heavy bass in it (I"m thinking rap, since it had that type of beat) for about 10 minutes.  LOUDLY.

This wasn't the first time I'd heard anything out of them either.....  there's always the usual tromping around like elephants trying out for "The Nutcracker"  or the sliding of the glass balcony door every 10 minutes or so during the evening hours.....

I've confronted the manager when I went to pay the rent this morning and she said she'd leave them a "nice little note" to quiet the music down....  I'm already in the mindset to move once my lease is up in Nov.  Just gonna bide my time til that point....

I'll be SOOOOO happy when I own my own place again    **** sigh****

Well and ceptic takes a little getting used too though if you're used to the city...With the well, you need a water softener, and the ceptic can only take biodegradable stuff...That means no cleaning paint brushes....

We do have a septic tank (which, knock on wood, has never given us any problems), but luckily we have rural water, so a well wasn't needed.

Man, this makes me thankful to not be living in an apartment anymore.

Had plenty of inconsiderate neigbors.  The worst was the upstairs neighbor that would fire up his home theater at 5:30 in the morning so he could listen to Stern and open his sliding closet doors at least 30 times before heading off to work.  Followed closely by the kids who love to play Nerf basketball at all hours of the day and night!

We bought our first home last year (which is located and the base of a hill) and we love it.  The only problem seems to be that in the summer when the windows are open, all the teenagers seem to be driving these Hondas with Coffee can tail pipes on them so we get the brunt of their 'fast and the furious' wanna-be cars revving to get up the hill.

I mean I hate having to pay Homeowners association dues, but it is stuff like that where the enforcement Committee comes in handy.
