OMG i just typed this decent sized reply and then it said my pic was too big, and i hit back and it was gone. But anyway the basic jist was, I ran 13.5 last time at the track but since then ive gotten a bunch of <auto-censored>. im definately hitting 12s this summer. but im really more into autocross than dragging

btw, 4g63T engine can easily take 400-500HP on stock internals. DSMs are the v8 slayers, 4 bangers can own v8s, just not those crappy SOHC honduh engines.

Nice to see your doing Autocross..

and no, they arnt V8 Slayers.. lmfao.. one of the 2 fastest production cars in the world is a v8.. >_<

That's how a lot of people think... hence the name.

Not all 4-cylinder cars are "rice".  A turbocharged 4-cyl can more than hold it's own against a V8, especially when it's awd.  Torque & horsepower don't know if their coming from 2,4,6,8, or more cylinders.

Now the aluminum wings and body kits... that's a whole different animal.  An ugly, ugly animal. ;)

ok, well liking both sides.. here are some referance points from our stock honda 4banger, 90 toro 3.6l v6 and 77 olds 403cid 6.6 and some other cars ive meet up with..

gotta 2000 civic EX Vtec SOHC 5spd with roughly 55k on it and its like new still.. like everything.. perfect still... reverse is tricky sometimes.

It can take on the freeway going to fast... not from a stop but top end stuff.. outrunnin the other car, playing catch up...

1990 3800 stock 170hp
1995 3800 stock 200hp
1995 2.0L Contour well used ;) <--- Skatedetroit :)

cars I have ran into that I don't know the owners of:

Some Mustang GT last body style before whats out now
99-00 buick century
a few f-150's
some dodge turbo diesl
that fancy Mark 8 with the cool tail light
Some 2dr Acura riced out
sunfires- pick one...
Audi A6 8? one of the two... made a turn and took off leaving them behind.. well never caught up...they were trying...

I mean the can do 130...(done once)

This was all on the freeway and the others were pokin around like "lok at the punks in the honda"

now up against a BMW/Benz or something else with some real go I dunno, ya gotta use some sense.. or your limitations...
It did keep up with this BMW wagon clippin up to 109....

"besy" is bone stock, But "she" moves on the open road. Corners liek a champ on the 16x7 wheels runnin Toyo proxie FZ4's. shes a daily driver and the Fiances' but don't tell her bout this ... shhhhhhh....

Then again my little 3800 was gonna run down some kid in a svt contour that thought he was slick s#*@.. ;)

The civy did take her moms 94 Sho though..

oh yeah..there are stock 4 "bangers" that run lows in the .25

Back in High School (around 1993-94), we used to race our Ford Escorts ALL THE TIME. But that was only because there were like 25 of us at the school that all had pre-89 escorts. Mine was an 88' and usually won, because I was the only one bright enough to run without a passenger!

Although my FIRST car was an 84 Regal Turbo, still the fastest car I have ever driven. Too bad some drunk fool totalled it (ran into it HARD while it was parked in front of my house).

I drive a stock Civic, bought it from a kid who wanted to make it a ricer.  Got it with 8k miles on it... guess the kid didn't realize it would cost him 3x the price of the car to make it raceable.  He had gotten as far as mirrors and rims, so it's a little riced out with the 15" rims and m3 mirrors.  I've had kids rev their engines at me because of it.  I bought it that way, though, with no intentions of ricing it.

Picture carting around 4 other people in one.....OFTEN.

I don't know if my wife will ever be able to repay me for that sacrifice.  Luckily, I lub her and she has her own personal hell living with me daily ;D

I think I'd like an 88-89 base-model CRX again when the kids get pushed out the door.  Nice little car to take camping and whatnot.

Damn kids will prolly drive the prices of 'em up beyond what's reasonable, tho.

see you guys are talking about hondas, those arent meant for racing.. im talking about like Mitsu Evos, or DSMs (eclipse, talon, laser), 300ZX, etc. those are actually fast 4 cylinders.

you can spend 3000 on a 90-94 AWD eclipse, spend like 1500 on mods, and run 12s all day.  i have nothing against v8s, except all new V8s these days are liek 30K or the old ones are all falling apart since they have carbs and need rebuilds, plus they guzzle gas like hell. Besides the fact you get associated with hicks if you drive a mustang or camaro. I do like 99+ trans ams though

I don't own either of these but I think you're making a pretty broad generalization there.

Besides, you get assosciated with brainless ricer teenagers if you drive a modded Japanese car.

You also get associated with snobbish weinerheads if you drive a British car. ;)

PMFJI,

I know nothing about cars.

Please explain to me what a "ricer" is. To me, rice is a grain or a university.

Also, how much horsepower is good? Wouldn't a lighter car need less horsepower to get the same acceleration as a heavier car with more horsepower?

I saw an ad for a large truck that had "300 horsepower". Is that a lot? Is Sephroth's 450+ horsepower a lot?

I looked up my car and it has a 277 horsepower engine. But it is a V8. Do engines with 8 cylinders have more horsepower than an engine with fewer cylinders, barring exotic superchargers and other additions?

Do hybrid engines really have the same power as pure gasoline engines? I have trouble believing that.

Buddabing

You shouldn't have any trouble believing that.  They are capable of moving a large mass quite a distance.  The trouble comes in believing that a hybrid engine can deliver the same performance, horsepower/torque wise, as a gasoline engine.

I always get a kick out of seeing people piss money away in tricking out their car to the Nth degree....then you see them head into their apartment they compromised on living in since they want to spend as much money as possible on even MORE improvements on their car.

Hey Stingray, I had a friend with a Triumph, and he wasn't a snobbish wienerhead....are you sure it's just not you? ;)  That was another car I enjoyed using Mag lights for headlights in a friggen electrical emergency one night!

I think its obvious that a smaller car needs less engine to move it, but you never have enough horse power if your a car guy, i do think 300 horse is better then average for a production car.

Half-truths! (I've been waiting to use that term)

Actually a hybrid can deliver in the torque category, but not the horspower:
http://auto.consumerguide.com/Auto/New/reviews/full/index.cfm/id/38254/Act/Specs/
2005 Toyota Prius

Torque (lb-ft) @ rpm  82 @ 4200

EPA city / highway mpg
CVT automatic  60/51
Notes: 1. Gas engine; electric motor has 67 hp @ 1200 rpm and 295 lb-ft @ 0-1200 rpm

Ricer has some different meaning for different people, but in general, a "ricer" is a person who mods an Import car either 1) just for looks ie. "all show, no go", or 2) mods it mechanically or cosmetically, but has some outrageous parts (huge unnecessary wings, 832 stickers on the car, etc etc.   You would call a car "rice" if it has these massive wings, body kits, etc etc.   Again though, some people think one thing is "rice" while others dont...

You'll never get a "right" answer on how much horsepower is good.  Depends on the car, the person, and what you're trying to do.  If you are going to get some groceries, your 115hp civic (or whatever) is just fine.  If you are a car guy... there is never enough. NEVER

That being said, I PERSONALLY think that anything over 300hp (for cars) is respectable.. but again... 300hp in a civic is a lot different than 300hp in a Cadillac sedan.

In general, it's not a stretch to say that a stock V8 will have more horsepower than a 4banger or V6.  Again though, its far from a rule.  There are imports that are tuned for performance from the factory that make more power than a common sedan, just as there are 100hp Hondas and 500HP V8 sportscars.  There is no rule.

I don't know much about Hybrids, so I can't really speak about that.

Isn't the cheapest route to a nasty fast car still the same as it has always been? Buy 2 cars, a good running (but junky rusted out turd of a car) big block equipped 4 door beast, and a lighter rear drive 70s V6 car and swap the engines between the 2?

I remember them doing that in the car magazines all the time and getting cars that run 12s for like $1000 or less total.

Half-truths! (I've been waiting to use that term)

Actually a hybrid can deliver in the torque category, but not the horspower:

MORE HALF TRUTHS FROM THE OPPOSITION!  (btw, don't wait to throw about claims like that.  It may be silly, but it feels good once in a while to throw stuff like that out there for no reason other than to incite debate....really!  Even if it's just joke-debate ;D

From your link, (and I fixed it for ya)  we find the following:
http://auto.consumerguide.com - Cooter's Link
2005 Toyota Prius
Size, liters/cu. in  1.5/91
Horsepower @ rpm  76 @ 4500
Torque (lb-ft) @ rpm  82 @ 4200
Availability  Standard1
EPA city / highway mpg
CVT automatic  60/51

And from the same website, we find my results demonstrating a hybrid isn't even in the ballpark:

http://auto.consumerguide.com - Drew's SuperCool awesome "you're so wrong Cooter" link
Horsepower @ rpm  160-200
Torque (lb-ft) @ rpm  235-255
Availability  Standard or auto
EPA city / highway mpg  5/7 blowing oil and other asorted stuff out the tailpipe

I've looked for hybrids that can serve the purpose my comparison vehicle serves, but they just don't stand up....I think it'd be funny to see what a hybrid looked like when I tried to use it for my purposes just because Cooter said it would work based on his stats.

Quote

Not that I'd ever be caught dead in a Prius. ;)

I ain't ashamed to be seen in my vehicle, heck, throw that Prius on the back of my vehicle, and I've got a "told ya so" grin on my face a mile wide!

I WOULD consider driving the Honda Insight, if they weren't so ungodly expensive.

Those car manufacturers aren't retarded.  They know if they make the price too attractive, they'll siphon more sales away from their easier-to-make gas-engine models, but if they price them low enough that the local dirt-eating sandal-wearing frog-licking tree-hugging wanna be's (or the ACTUAL "lol models" they want to be) think they're reasonably priced, they'll make some money from the green-friendly bunches too.

The animal/vegetable oil converted diesels are running around now, push for that to be worked on and improved, and you'll have REAL improvements.
