Back to the Future Project...Need Assistance
« on: April 08, 2005, 04:19:37 pm »
Well forum...I need your assistance. Last night I slipped in the bathroom, hit my head on the sink. When I came too, I had a vision...a revelation...a picture of the theme to my very first arcade cab. "The Flux Capacitor". I figure that I have always loved the trilogy and it would be a perfect way to go "back in time" to play the classic games we all used to love. Problem now is that I am just beginning to understand illustrator (see example below of the first graphic I've ever done...toon delorean) and I would like to rack everyones brain for some great ideas. I also am having a very difficult time finding with good source material. If any illustrator guru's or general super genius's would care to lend a hand with ideas, I would be most appreciative.

Thanks again for everyone's time and consideration,
Matt

People keep coming up with such great ideas lately! First the willy wonka cab, an now this!
Can't help you much though as far as the artwork goes... If i could i will though!
Did you do the delorean? It looks really nice!
As far as source material goes, pop the dvd into your computer and PrntScrn whenever you need...
I did make the logo once for a small flash game, but mine was really cartoony and wasn't really anything worth mentioning...
It looks like we're gonna see quite a few visually pleasing cabs soon!
I had a cool sig once... But it had to go because of *someone*... You know who you are!

In keeping with your cartoony delorean pic, I would say get the bttf cartoon show for cheap on eBay and use that for the artwork...especially if you want to incorporate illustrator...Also, the console ports available for the nintendo emulators(especially the nes ones) had graphics that were very classic arcade looking.  I look forward to seeing the results...
It doesn't matter if you win or lose....it's how you play the videogame.

Thanks for all of the help so far guys...

Sage - Thank you for the compliment...It was my first time dealing with illustrator.

RoboG2 - Thank you for the search...they are great starts on source material.

Rohan - I am unsure if I will stay with a cartoon theme or mix real life in there, I was considering using Mamewah and use screenshoots as the primary emulator screens. But, I am not sure yet...what do you think?...

Tommy - I believe NES or SNES made a BTTF game...not 100% sure though.

Felsir - Yep, just like M3talhead said "I remember watching BttF the cartoon on Saturday mornings". I believe it was on back in the early 90's. I wouldn't be able to coax you into working up some of your artistic genius for this would I?. I am sure you are incredibly busy with the cabs you have going now...

M3talhead - Those were the days when I would wake up...watch Saturday morning cartoons...then head off to the arcade. Ahhhh, the memories...Now I just get up and head to work :o. But, what you said justifies my point of why it should be a good theme to take us back to the days of old...

Thanks again for the replies so far all...Keep them coming!!!

BTTF is a pretty cool idea for a theme, I think.

If it were me, I'd be doing as much to  the cab to make it look like the Delorean.  Ideas that come to mind:

  • Build a flux capacitor into the front somewhere that can light up and approximate the one in the movie
  • Use that label tape in a lot of places (or at least the corresponding font on printed stuff like the marquee and CPO
  • Lots of lights and lighted buttons, and something with the giant display board that had the LCD numbers showing the dates
  • Paint the cabinet that steely grey color (or get full artwork with the same effect), with accents around to give it the feel of the car

There are a few ideas off the top of my head.  I've never seen the cartoon, so I can't comment on that, but I love the movies.  If it were me doing it, I'd probably stick to the movie stuff...

There are definitely Nes BTTF games; I know because I've played them and they suck...They're more eighties than the cartoon, which definitely had a nineties feel to it.

Stuzza - I have considered that very idea, as I used to own the posters also. However, I want to make this cab more unique than just the exact movie posters. Thanks for the thoughts though, anymoe would be greatly appreciated.

Missionconrol - I have considered that...However, I am still stuck on the name the Flux-Capacitor. I am thinking of incorporating that into the side panels or cp though. Thanks for the idea.

Rohan - I am very much considering the "308" stainless look. A friend owns a vinyl cutting shop that I believe has material with that look. As far as the cartoon vs. movie, I am torn...If I go with the cartoon I will have an easier time with vectoring. I won't have access to high res images until the DVDs come out in October. Now, if I go with the movie, I have a strong collection now as well as images that I could use for a mamewah FE. There is too many choices...grrrrrr. Thanks for the thoughts though.

Jonnyboy - Already in the works...I am actually trying to figure a way to incorporate that sound clip as a start-up intro.

Bnelsontfs - Already have the neon on order to build the "flux" into the cab...just don't know where...lol...Lights and buttons are a good possibility...thinking about coming up with a "LCD" font and layout similar to the movie for a very basic bezel instruction sheet. Keep um coming.

You all are geniuses...that why I have put in this "pleading" post for thoughts and ideas...Please keep the ideas flowing...

this should be made into the marquee:

That would make for a killer kick panel!!! If there's some place online that sales fakes that look like real plates, you could really create a sweet effect with that...

I'm pretty sure they sold fake versions of the plate at Universal Studios..... so they may have them for sale online.........

Conseit:

I have the entire BTTF series on VCD, which is a dumbed down DVD.  It's basically recorded in MPEG-1, (not MPEG-2 like DVDs).  Can be played/captured on just about any PC.

Let me know if you need ay parts of it.

The quality is about what you'd find on a VHS, sort-of pixilated/blurry, but it's there.

Let me know....

This is a website address for some small neon supplies for the flux capacitor.  This company has some good supplies, speakers, panel amps, casters etc.  Hope this helps some.

p.s. This may have been already asked but is this a cockpit or upright cab?  If sit down you have gotta put the gullwing doors on it!!!

Flyguy - I appreciate that site. Luckily I have a local dealer to get those items for to build the flux capacitor. Also, this cabinet will end up being an upright cab since I live in an apartment. However, the day I move into a house, the cockpit cab will begin  ;D

Chris - Yes, I have seen that script. Last I heard though is that it will not happen due in large part to Micheal J. Fox being unable to return to that kind of role.

Daniel270 - Yeah, I saw that item on eBay also. I am thinking though that a graphic of that would work better visually than an actual plate screwed to the side of the cab. It might work on the wall above the cab though... ;)

Chris - I actually used to have one of those...the wife ended up with it during the divorce years back though. However, rather than using those graphics I am hoping that the BTTF cartoon will have similar images...now I just have to wait until the DVD comes out in October  >:(...unless of course one of my fellow BYOAC members can track down some originals.

Once again, thank you everyone who is helping me in this agonizing design process. Currently, I am looking for either hi-res pictures of the time display, flux capacitor or a similar font for the display.

You have got to do somthing with this scene from BTTF II:

Kid 1: It's a video game.
Kid 2: I got it working.
Kid 1: My dad told me about these.
Marty (to himself): It is "Wild Gunman"
Kid 1: How do you play this thing?
Marty: I'll show you, kid. I'm a crack shot at this.
Kid 1: You mean you have to use your hands. That's like a baby's toy.
Marty (to himself): Baby's toy?
