Frankenstein (FINISHED! june 29, 2005)
« on: March 31, 2005, 01:34:47 am »
I'm working on two projects now... the DDR cab (Winxclub theme) and a project on request. A Frankenstein cabinet. I'm making this one for someone else and I have permission to put a WIP thread here so all can enjoy

For the artwork: not yet, it will be another thread in this part of the forum.
For the cab itself, see this thread

I found much better source material (3 times the details of my current source) so I'm redrawing various parts with this new "insight" :)

Another update. I also traced the outline of the characters to indicate the size and a rough estimate of the progress.

Looks great, like the way it's detailed on top and fades to black at the bottom.

...does she have two moles?

That was intentional? I just figured he didn't finish the black parts yet... (after all, this WIP)

@BobbyG66: I'm not sure what you mean by 'mole' (English is not my native tongue) but if you mean the spots (like Cindy Crawford has) - yes

Oldsage is correct: it's a WIP and I traced the black outline to indicate the % of work done. Sort of a visual reference to what the total image size will be. So the black part represents the "to-do" part of the image.

I really, really don't mean to be a jerk and I'm not trying to hurt anybody's feelings, but what exactly is so great about his work?  I agree that it's an awesome image, but he's just tracing someone else's drawing right?  That's not particularly difficult to do, just time consumning.  Please help me understand why this is so spectacular.

« Reply #18 on: April 15, 2005, 05:00:48 pm »
It's amazing for several reasons.

1) Artwork like this is meant to print out at a very large size. So the traced detail has to be extremely accurate. Unfortunately the source material is generally very small.. a matter of a few inches across. Scanning the material at a high resolution doesn't help after a certain point as all you are doing is enlarging the dot pattern of the printout which doesn't help define anything for tracing. So there is generally quite a bit of interpretation that you've got to do. That may not sound significant, but I've spent PLENTY of time pencil sketching from J Scott Campbell's artwork (this image's original artist) and I'm always amazed at how different the girls look with even the slightest variation in line curvature and even line thickness. This is especially true in the small regions like the eyes and lips... which are likely no more than a fraction of an inch on the original. So reason #1 is that the "tracing" itself can be interpretive and consequently hard.

2) Vectorizing precise detail is easier seen than done. To call it tracing is a bit of an over-simplification.

@Pixelhugger: thanks for the kind words! I can only say that I'm also very, very impressed by the Mission Control cab design -and building- and I watch that thread with equal awe! Everyone can create a cab as well that everyone can pick some image to slap on the sides, but to create something (be it cab or art) with so many subtle layers is a whole different thing.

@oldsage : one of my friends wanted a cab too, he gave some indications on what kind of cab he wanted, so we discussed some images. I got sorta 'carte-blanche' in cab design. Since I will see the cabinet quite a lot I want it to be pretty to look at  ;)

Probably no update today, I've been out this weekend so I had no time to vectorise anything. Oh well, maybe later today during lunch break  ;D

Sort of an update... I forgot to take my USB memorystick with me, so I couldn't work on Frankenstein & Doc. So I started work on the marquee.

The bakcground will be altered with stone slabs, another gargoyle will be added to the right and the gargoyles will have rings in their mouths. So there is also a lot of work to be done here... (ppfft! ...and I didn't even start on the CP, wich has images of rats on it...)

Since I figured that the marquee was 75% done, I decided to complete that one first: both the gargoyles are finished, started work on the background.

Finished the marquee. I'm still fiddling with shading and hilighting. I'm going to continue with the main picture now, and see if the marquee needs tweaking later. Sometimes it helps to "step away" from it, to come back to it later.
Comments on the finished marquee are appreciated.

WOW!! Man, I'm just consistently amazed by your work Felsir. I love the mechanical detail in the arm. Is that what you lost in your spontaneous reboot a few days back?

If so I'd say that's quite a voordeel for your nadeel!  ;)

Just beautiful.

1) Where did you find source pics for this?
2) What software are you using to vectorize?

edit: I think I found my own answer to #2. I downloaded Frostillicus's tutorial on Illustrator, that helped. Is that what you're using?

On a side note, what's the going rate for artwork requests like this?
