You mean the original series? It doesn't hold up to todays TV standards by a long shot (production wise). I used to watch it every week growing up, but if you compare the old series to modern SciFi stuff like Battlestar Galactica, it's laughable. The storylines might be noteworthy, but the cheap sets and theatre style acting would be an instant turn off. Like how some old arcade games were totally adictive, but most people can't stand playing Space Invaders for more than 1 minute today (even me).

i remember dr who from john pertwee on and lost interest after tom baker. they are repeating the whole lot right now and ive watched it from ther very first episode. and while i didnt particularly like the first two drs, the two i just mentioned were brilliant. not to mention pertwees nemisis the master (see avatar  ).

i love it so much that even though im moving interstate soon and will be living in a backpackers for a while (yes, ill try and beat off those danish backpackers and keep myself pure) ive just bought a cheap little portable tv just so i dont miss any episodes

They're similar to a Gummy Bear, but the jelly is softer and they're coated in this amazing thin powdered suger kinda crust thing. Biting the head off a Jelly Baby is much more satisfying than dis-membering a Gummy Bear.

I'm not sure if I've seen them in the US, but I'd imagine they're in Australia.

I just watched the first episode last night.  Boy, am I getting old!  You can tell they're really going for the younger crowd with the fast pace and attractive cast.  I hope the show makes it, but I'm one of the less picky viewers - almost any Dr. Who is good Dr. Who.

Slightly OT - am I the only nerd here who has Dr. Who trading cards?  If anyone else has them, I'd be up for trading extras.  If anyone wants a complete set of Cornerstone series one cards, I could send one out to you for say $10 shipped - I must have 8 or 9 extra sets.

What I particularly liked about Jon Pertwee was that no matter how unrealistic the monsters were, or how preposterous the plot was, he always played the role with utter conviction!

I finally got to see the first episode of the new series.  I liked it!!!!

When did the TARDIS control room get so big?  Was it like that in the 1996 movie? I don't remember.

I also managed to see the very first Dr Who episode ever aired.  It was interesting, but I think he has to be my least favorite docotor so far.  I haven't seen any of the sixth or seventh Doctor's episoide yet.

There is a site out there that lists all the episodes and what condition the archives are in.  Oddly enough it is the second doctor that has the fewest intact episodes.

I especially liked that I could see them without commercials.

I did see the movie in 1996 and thought it was OK, but I remember thinking that they had made some bad decisions with the storyline.

I also saw the first of the Peter Cushing movies, and thinking it ws really disappointing.  Especially the inside of the Tardis. Yech!!!a

Sounds like my experience as well.  I started watching them in the 80s on PBS when I was a teen.  The effects were campy even at the time but that was part of the charm.   I too got started with Tom Baker, then was introduced to Pertwee and eventually Peter Davison and I don't think I ever saw any of the Colin Baker episodes.

There are more than one movie!

In 1965 we got Dr. Who and the Daleks

In 1966 it was Dalek's Invasion Earth: 2150 AD.

1996 brought us the american made for TV movie Doctor Who: Enemy Within

The first two starred Peter Cushing as the Doctor.  I was able to borrow the first one from the library.  The production values weren't much different than the TV show and the TARDIS interior set was a joke.  The doctor in these two movies is a human inventor and not a Timelord.  The script of the first movie is very similar to one of the early Dalek episodes.

The TV movie tried to fit in with the rest of the TV series, but they made some changes that I don't understand.  The Doctor is half human? Why would it take a human to open the Eye Of Harmony?    The production and secial effects were very good, but the plot gets a little bizarre at the end.

Well I feared the worst after all the hype. But I saw the first episode on Saturday and was surprised how good it was. They actually appear to have spent some money on it.

The writing wasn't up to the standards of the best Jon Pertwee/Tom Baker era stories but it's easily the best Dr Who episode I've seen since Tom Baker left.

Apparently the new series gets better as it goes along so I'll definitely keep watching.

To be honest I was a little disappointed with the second episode. The story was a bit thin and things like how the Doctor knew who the culprit was were not properly explained.

In particular, the bit when the Doctor plugged what seemed to be a new battery into Rose's phone so she could speak to her mother in the past was totally absurd! I know this is only a kids show but come on!

I think the main problem is the writers have decided to fit a complete story into each 45 minute episode which doesn't give enough time to develop a substantial plot. They got away with it in episode one because everything happened so quickly.

Another thing I miss from the old series is the cliffhanger at the end of each episode.

Anyway I'll keep watching if only to see the flying Daleks!

I watched the pilot for the "K9 and Company" spinoff series.

It was a decent sory, but it seemed to be lacking something without the Doctor.  The theme song was really irritating.

I am impressed.  The first three stories seemed a little short because they were a single episode in 45 minutes, so there were no cliffhangers.

The fourth episoide however did end on a cliff hanger, and I guess it will be a two parter.

There is a brief clip from Cassanova in one of "A New Dimension" special that aired just before the first new episode.   Russle T Davies was part of that show as well as the new Dr. Who.

There is no new that I am aware of regarding a US release.

I just finished watching episode 6: "Dalek".

Daleks do fly, it is more of a float or hover used to get around obsticals like stairs.

This is not something that they added for the new series.  It was first seen in the Sylvester McCoy episode "Remembrance of the Daleks".

I just started watching them from the net and i must say I am liking them--not real brain twisters but fun nonetheless.  it would be nice if they were cliff hangers though--makes watching them more fun.  How do they typically explain the chnages in doctors?  or is it just done and everybodya cts like nothing has changed.  Personally, I like it when they offer some explanation (even cheesy) as to why a completely different person is playing the same role...

At this point, the only regeneration we have not seen, or even had explained is the 8th to 9th doctor. We have no clue yet as to what happened to Paul McGann's doctor.

i've been watching the repeats from the beginning since pre- jon pertwee id never seen any of them. i've been enjoying it immensely (up to 1979- tom baker at the moment) but for some strange reason around this era they cant show episodes with daleks in it. WTF? the early episodes showed daleks and apparently there are daleks in the new series. what happened? it can be very frustrating. for instance, they changed the actress playing romana just recently but of course it was all explained in a story which involved daleks, which they didn't show. is there some pedantic individual who owns copyright on them or something or is chraging a fortune for later episodes? i'd have thought the BBC had rights to the whole lot...

It occurs at the very beginning, and is not really part of the story.  It is somewhat amusing, as Romana trys out several bodies before finally settling on Lalla Ward.

The Dalkes were created by writer Terry Nation, and his estate has control of the copyright.  I beleive there was some problem with getting the rights to use them for the new series.  Maybe there is a problem with distribution rights in Australia.

You could check the local library.  Many of the old episodes were released on VHS.  Many of them are also available on DVD.

hehe. probably not, but youve given me an idea. in hommage to my hippy wanderings ill paint my next full sized upright purple!!

oh and i now own a 5 in 1 namco joystick thingo. i panicked yesterday because id seen it in one shop. but other shops i went to had everything but that one. you know atari console, spiderman, streetfighter. so i went back to the first shop and bought it. better safe than sorry (",)

great news for ME! the hostel im staying at has a TV that keeps playing up. ive been watching it on my lil portable b & w. the other night the TV got stuck on channel 2. you guessed, thats dr who channel! (and 'the bill' but thats another story). so for the first time in over a month i got to watch it on a full sized TV in COLOUR (",)
ive also sorted a place to stay and she has a TV and gets home from work around the time dr who finishes so im all set. i move in a week or so (",)

about the new series. does anyone else think those aliens that invade earth look a bit like slightly menacing 'E.T's? i think its purposeful myself, just to show that why should a dangerous character actually LOOK dangerous.

I guess they do have sort of an ET face, but the rest of their body is much more realistic.  I never understood why ET had such short stubby legs.

I just watched episode 13.  It was pretty good.

Now I have to wait until Christmas for more new episodes.

I just got this tidbit of the BBC website!

Doctor Who returns to BBC ONE in the Spring, and comes to the SCI FI Channel in the US from March.

I saw the latest episode that came out on Christmas.  So far it looks like the new guy will work out.  The ending was a little weak, but that is the writer's fault.
