Just curious what your instruction cards look like. I'm sure you all have guests come over and want to play your cab. Do you have a seperate card for each emulator?

I've been making a load of instruction screens for my cocktail cab, its only got about 25 classic games so I made instructions for each game showing the marquee, cabinet and control information.
I have GameLauncher set up to show the instruction screen while Mame loads the game in the background, works great!

I'll post one when I get home...

I'm re-doining my glass/bezel so I'll have a Defender instruction card (modified).  Here's my current one:

Not very useful for most other games.   ;)

I gave up on the idea when I realized that *I* didn't even notice that my cabinet still had an original instruction card on the bezel for Time Pilot 84.

If I don't bother to read those things, I can't imagine anyone else would.

I prefer to use DOS machines, so MameWah isn't an option. GameLauncher is pretty much idiot-proof, so instructions for the FE itself aren't really necessary.

"Select Game with Red Joystick and Insert Coin to Play"
I set it up this way since that is what all my guests were doing anyway...Logic = thats what I did in the arcade, this is an arcade machine, so thats what I'll do :P
Got old saying "no, hit this button then put in a coin"

Ok. gonna try to do this again. Had problems before. Losing what i wrote cause of said above.

I did this before loading up an instruction while MAME loads the game but it was not enough time to read it. So I ditch that and just have an image instead like pic enclosed.

the idea I had was, when the game is loaded or during gameplay/attrack mode etc... A certain button (HELP" is pushed and the info and how to play the game is displayed. it work most like the history/mameinfo DAT files but this files reveal the other MAME setup stuff. So now, I only have an image of the Control Layout for that GAME to show, see pic of a Pacman layout and a Street figheter layout.

*addition* also when it display the Control Image and user push the buttons (SF Layout) it blocks the button pushed on the screen.

"Select Game with Red Joystick and Insert Coin to Play"

so the coin insert is actually your "ENTER" key or just changed in the advmenu.rc file. Do you reward them with one credit when its loaded ?

ascreen shot when the buttons are pushed while the image help is displayed. Button 1 and 4 is pushed in this sample. The button image is BLOCK.

The image underneath the CP LAyout image says " Player one button 1, Player 1 Button 4" Those are the buttons pushed. Also this is another way for testing GHOSTING keys.

Here's an example of one of my instruction screens that appears after you've selected a game in GameLauncher.

TheNasty: When were those options added to AdvMame? I been using 0.67 since it came out and haven't looked at newer versions.

No, there's a DOS Kymaera, but I can't get it running  :(

What kind of issues are you having?  If you can find it, post in the existing Kymaera thread, so we don't take it over.  It took me a while to get it running, but I did.  The arcade monitor modes are what aren't working.

This support for "HELP IMAGE" was started in version v78. It comes with a default KEYBOARD layout and you can make any image you want (like I did)

So is this "HELP IMAGE" part of the standard AdvMame package?  How easy is it to add those files?

Here's mine... its only instructions on how to exit the various emulators, and what controls they use.  That's really the only complicated part about my arcade cab.

and no I don't actually use a X-Arcade i just used the graphic...

TheNasty: When were those options added to AdvMame? I been using 0.67 since it came out and haven't looked at newer versions.

This support for "HELP IMAGE" was started in version v78. It comes with a default KEYBOARD layout and you can make any image you want (like I did)

So is this "HELP IMAGE" part of the standard AdvMame package?

here you can just copy it.
The Pac layout and SF layout is already posted above.

Here is a Trackball and Spinner layout.

Then when you want to make an Arkanoid Layout, just BLACK out the BUTTONS and leave just one button.

OR re-arrange it anyway you want.

you can make all layout base on this posted. Here is an example
Dkong (takne form the 4way-7b.png) and Centipede (taken from the Track-7b.png). All I did was blacken the buttons not used and call it 4way-1b.png (dkong) and Track-1b.png (Centipede).

Spiderman is in the pic.  Thus Marvel, but not sure of the actual storyline that the poster is from.

A well designed control panel should require minimal instruction. Of course, there are always functions that people won't understand unless instructed. I keep those games / functions away from the casual visitor. Closer friends I instruct by example. There could be arguments either way, but I prefer simplicity and ease of use over depth of functionality (as far as instructions are concerned)

Ok here's the .ai version (you need Adobe Illustrator to edit it) saved as version 8. It's a bit messy too, also uses raster effects so to make them appear nicely make sure your raster settings are set to about 150 in Illustrator (Effect -> Document Raster Effects Settings -> Resolution). The buttons on here are the ones I posted a while back seperately here:

edit: I think this forum is scaling the images making them look pixellated
