« on: October 07, 2002, 12:09:43 am »
Hellow everyone,
Here is the deal,my brother bought a brand new monitor couple of days ago(2 months) and that monitor had some problem last week. The picture getting all dim.MEANS,I could start the computer all good but after while it will just go off by itself >:(.We had to tap or I should say smack it around to get the picture back but now its totally gone :( >:( :'(.

Anyone has any clue on what might have happend here???

I know nothing about monitors so if its too risky to fix myself then anyone interested in buying it off me.Its 19" GEM 1600x1200/75hz....Its a very good looking monitor and I can post a pic of the inside if someone thinks they could tell me what's might have happend by takin a look inside.Willing to sell too as my brother bought a brand new one yesterday(he got money and cares less). He paid $300 for the GEM monitor but any decent offer is cool. 8)

P:S:  NULLBY,
Don't offer ever ever ever again.I dont want your $20 offer.

I hope some monitor Guru would answer this, cuase I am also having the same problem. I already have the thing apart and if i smack/move something, it comes back on. The power is lit all the time, but the screen goes blank. i am aiming at the FLYBACK if a GURU would agree with my assumption. i had re-solder some points wishing it was only a cold solder, but it did not work. If no GURU wants to reply, maybe anyone knows where anyone can get FLYBACK Transformers for the PC ? or are they interchangeable from another PC ?

You probbly don't need a receipt for the monitor.  Many hardware (especially hardrives) have a date on them. If the date is within the warranty period you probably don't need a receipt.  unless you were told you need a receipt, either try where you bought the monitor from or gateway.

The monitor that doesn't work is called "GEM".He bought the pc from systemax and the monitor came with it and that company dont even exist now i believe.Even if i had the warrenty,I would not sent it because i pay all the lame shiping and its about a $100.If no one replies then i will put on buy/sell thread as untested or nonworkin.I am pretty sure that someone could easyly fix it..

I had a sony monitor that went blank one day. It cost about $127 to get it fixed. That was back when 15" monitors went for $300+

YMMV

it would be nice to let us know what they changed. That way we have a clue of what part is the culprit.

I'm not a "guru" per say, but I can share what I know about CRTs...

I know nothing about monitors so if its too risky to fix myself then anyone interested in buying it off me.

There is enough stored voltage in the capactior to kill you, no joke  :o.  If you don't know what your doing and don't know how to properly discharge a cap, LEAVE IT ALONE!  :)

If I had to take a guess with the information given, I'd say the capacitor is bad.  Diming means a loss of power to the beam, it's just not providing enough energy for a full picture anymore.

Have you heard a noticeably loud pop or a crack at all?  If you smell in the back of the monitor, does it have the very familiar burnt capacitor (Melted plastic) smell?  If so, the cap will need to be replaced, but once again, if you don't know exactly what your doing, don't even try.  FAR too dangerous without the proper tools/knowledge.

Unless you have a case like neuromancer and the monitor costs a fortune compared to what it will take to fix it and have it shipped, you'll be money ahead to just dispose of that one and go buy a new one.
Still in the collecting parts and ideas phase of cabinet building.

no physical BURNT, BROKE  caps, resistor etc...Board looks very good. If I saw a cap that has its top blown off, i would have notice it. Until now, still not fifured out whats wrong. I t might be a hair line crack in the run-wire (is that what its called) on the board itsself. I have re-re-re-solder every point on the board hoping it was a cold solder, but no luck. I am ruling out the FLYBACK theory. As this point, it seems like a good idea to stick my tounge in the HOLE :)  ... I like stickng my tounge in holes :) ...
