My Retro side-art concept
« on: January 31, 2005, 12:32:50 am »
Here's a quick idea for my side-art. It's supposed to go with the control panel I designed, as discussed in this thread: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,29696.0.html

I would make a custom marquee, if I were you. I like the simple, clean look of it. Good job.  :)

(A) That is freakin' awesome
(B) I like the Asteroids-ship suggestion
(C) I like your CP as well
(D)... I'm not feeling the aesthetic connection between the CP and the side art.  Maybe it's the extensive use of white on the art that's not present on the CP.... I don't know.... maybe it's just me :)
(E) No matter what, the stuff looks really nice

I love it :)

I agree with quarterback a bit...maybe use more white on your CPO or less white on the sideart so they match slightly better.

You must do a custom marquee to go with it all too!

Good work

thats really nice! although i agree about the cp not working with the side aswell as it could. Maybe if all the buttons/joysticks were white?

I might not put the astroids ship on there.  I just looks like a triangle.  I might throw the space invaders or galaga ship on there instead.  They would be much more reconizable.

Looks very nice, very retro!  I agree the triangles should be hollow to look more like an asteroids ship, or put a "shot" coming from the front to make it more obvious, switch it with a boulder, or what not.  The CP doesn't tie in greatly with the sideart, but neither do a lot of classics, so I wouldn't lose any sleep.  I'd do a custom marquee for certain though.

I also agree with everyone.

Ditch the triangle.
Make the white sideart match the dark CP.
Make a matching marquee.

Great work!

Super nice work. Personally I don't object at all to the CP and side art combo (and thats coming from someone hell-bent on over theming projects). I love the color pallete and the very clean use of those retro borders. Very cool.

I do agree that it's screaming for a custom marquee to match though, absolutely.

Thanks all. Marquee is next on the list yes. That one there was just for mock-up purposes.

Also the side-art is going to get much more refined than that. Part of my inspiration for it is Atari's Smokey Joe: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=9593

And Universal's generic cabs: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=8374

Speaking of Universal, are these not the "trippiest" arcade game cabs??

My suggestion: Make the sideart background dark blue like the CP and make the characters white.  Change the lower triangle to the Asteroids ship and the upper one to the "Enterprise" ship from Space War or a "Threat" ship from Rip Off.

Great work!

I actually think it works well with the CPO. But a custom marquee is definitely in order, to keep with the flat color/hard edge style going on elsewhere.

Great stuff, Ray
