That's funny.  I was laughing ---my bottom--- off when I got to page six of the pictures on the first link.  You've gotta read at least a few of the preceding pages, though.

Americans apologizing.

This is a fake picture.

Since 3 million more people voted for Bush.  it would not be "- Half of America"

If this is not a fake, then it shows that the Americans apologizing, can't do simple math.

um, it was 51% to 48%

3 million may be very little diff. to you, but the simple math of it is that it wasn't half.  It may be trivial to you, but in the real world, 2 + 2 doesn't equal 5, it's 4.

What you are referring to is "theory".  He's referring to "simple math", so to disparage him by proving his point only serves to further illustrate his point, and to add an exlamation point.

And now I just can't help myself anymore, james ;)  Too much oregano today  ;)

Im sorry, but 48 compared to 50 is very trivial in this instance. It's much easier on the eyes to see "- half of america" than to see "-almost half of america"

Um...you've removed almost a million votes in your thick-fingered typing frenzy.  Bush had 51%, not 50%.  I know it's a small difference, but it illustrates again why you're not arguing from a position of strength.  Numbers, in this argument, mean something.

The fact that you have to include words like "very trivial" and "very little difference" should make you realize that while Dartful is arguing apples and oranges, you're arguing Tooth Fairy and Easter Bunny.

I'll give you an example you can relate to.

Let's say possession of oregano  ;)  is legal up to 1 ounce.  Let's also say it's illegal to possess more than 1 ounce of oregano.

Follow me so far, pizza man  ;)  Good!

Now, you're caught with 3 million ounces of oregano.  Are you in possession of more than the legal limit or less than the legal limit?

2 + 2 = 8 is easier on the eyes, what with the "roundy" shape of the number 8, but it isn't correct, it isn't trivial (to some), and it is QUITE a big diff from the actual result.  See, while it may be "easier on the eyes" to read, it's still not accurate, which is all that Dartful is pointing out.

I'll show Dartful's simple math, as I think he'll appreciate my demonstration

  51
-48
3 (million or percent, you decide, but you're still off by 3)

Let's say I build you a house, but all the measurements are off by 3.  Take your choice.  Inches or feet.  Would you want to be exact, or would you be fine with "a trivial amount" or "very little difference"?  See, that's all he's saying here.  It matters to him.

Let him have his fun, his simple math is correct.

but thats not what the instance IS. and seriously, the oregano jokes are getting old. Hes saying 49% (which it is in actuality if you count independant votes) isn't half. its ---Bad words, bad words, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when saint censors you?--- close. hes attacking them because they are 1% off. sorry, thats pretty frivilous

but thats not what the instance IS
others in there chose to use specific numbers, and others there (IIRC) used the specific %.  What Dartful is pointing out, and that you, for some illogical reason can't seem to get, is that the pic he linked to is showing a dolt who doesn't understand that 48% is not 50%.

Quote
and seriously, the oregano jokes are getting old.
you would prefer fennel, monsieur? ;D  Why not just BEG me to continue making oregano jokes!

Quote
Hes saying 49% (which it is in actuality if you count independant votes) isn't half.
in actuality we give independent votes to independent candidates, like your Mr Badnarik.   If you want to use that flawed logic, then I am well within my flawed logic rights to assume that all independent votes would have gone to Bush and that Bush actually had 52%.

Again, I'll have to insist that you stick to the "simple math" that you can't seem to grasp

Quote
its ---Bad words, bad words, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when saint censors you?--- close.
now really, is cussing necessary?  Is it the oregano in your system?

Oh, and again, you simply MUST realize that while in your mind it may be "---Bad words, bad words, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when saint censors you?--- close", you still can't state accurately that it's half.  Speaking of close, I believe you're "close" to the truth.  Take the next step and admit that 51% is 3% more than 48%.

Or, if it will make you feel better to count the independent votes in with the major party, take the next step and admit that 52% is 4% more than 48%.

Barring all that, give this a whirl    Repeat as necessary until simple math no longer eludes you.

Quote
hes attacking them because they are 1% off. sorry, thats pretty frivilous
actually, they're 3-4% off.  Go ahead, check my numbers out.  They add up any way you slice it.  Oh, and he's attacking them because they can't get the facts in their apology correctl

As for being frivolous, I think we can both agree that hitting you with an orange would be pretty frivolous, yes?  Let me try it with 3 million oranges.

listen, the sorry everybody isnt just for ppl who voted for kerry. everyone who voted against bush. 1% indie, 48% demi and 51% republi.

that addsup to 49-51 (anti bush to bush).

you obviously cant have half the votes and still win. thats not what democracy is about.

somehow, somewhere you have bestowed upon yourself the ability to read minds.  I myself have taken to using your illogic in refuting your claim, and will do so yet again.

You state 48% democrat, yet your final number comes up 49%.  You assume every idependent voter was a vote against Bush.  I'll use your illogic to clearly state that every independent voter was voting against Kerry, and therefore, Bush then recieves 52% of the vote.

All those silly numbers aside, you have come to grasp that the percentages still favor Bush, AND you are even starting to get the ACTUAL percentages correct!  Good for you!

James, I consider you to be my pet project, and I refuse to quit until you can grasp this concept.

Let's investigate a bit further, shall we?

On 11/17/04 @ 11:29:05 a.m. Dartful Dodger posted a comment about a guy whose picture said "sorry world, we tried" and he signed it "half of America"

Quote
This is a fake picture.
This part is opinion, as he doesn't truly know this.  He is assuming it's fake because (and here's MY assumption of Dartful) he can't believe that guy's that big of a dolt that he can't understand simple math, as the dolt's picture is wrong, according to said simple math.

Quote
Since 3 million more people voted for Bush.  it would not be "- Half of America"
Dartful points out the inaccuracy of the guy's statement in reference to the voting public..

Lastly, Dartful says
Quote
If this is not a fake, then it shows that the Americans apologizing, can't do simple math.
Since the numbers, the percentages, whatever fact you choose to use to point out how Bush won will agree with Dartful's position that indeed, half of America is mathematically incorrect, the only thing left to conclude is that you must be one of those Dartful is lamenting about.

Quote
you obviously cant have half the votes and still win. thats not what democracy is about.
Someone go tell Mr Clinton he wasn't president.   In our system, the MAJORITY (please please please please for the love of Rudy understand what "majority" means) is the winner.  In this case, not only was it a majority, it was more than 50%

ok, maybe I misspoke, but you see my point. I was just trying to get him to not say that we cant do simple math or hes lying.
but that dolt WAS unable to do simple math, or else he was lying, and he's not the first person to do so.  Your eagerness to "prove" that 48-49% is the equivalent of 51% and the lengths to which you are willing to go in order to prove this would probably, in Dartful's mind, lump you in with other said dolts.

I don't think you're a dolt, I just think you're excited to prove that John Kerry was close to the same number of votes as Bush, even if it doesn't disprove Dartful's fact that 49% of the voting public is not half.

There ARE other ways to argue your point, but I'm not going to help you out.  I'm just trying to make you think out your arguments better.

Geez, the political posts go away and all of a sudden people can't argue anymore.  Time for school... ;)

Lesson One:  Kill the weed at the root.

48, 49, 50, 51... doesn't matter.  The sign is wrong because none of those numbers represent "Americans".  Those figures represent Americans who voted.  The sign in question does not make this distinction.

:P

I think the "general idea" is accurate though.  Half is close enough.

btw, Bush didn't win by 3 million votes.  He won by 136,483 Ohio votes. ;)  (according to my numbers)

Floyd, do you see what he did there?  He assessed the claim, perhaps wondered if the math wasn't the crucial thing, and then argued THAT point as to why Dartful was wrong.

See, I TOLD you there was a better way to make your argument.  I wasn't even arguing whether Dartful was wrong, I was arguing that YOU were wrong.  Your points were, but so was Dartful's, as Coot points out.

I have a BEEEYOOOOOTEEEEEFUL smiley for this, but I'm saving it for a better example, and I'll use it just for you buddy!  :D

i can't believe i'm even posting here but these kids are driving me nuts
it's a guy with a notebook posting a silly picture on the net
he says half
so what
he's darn close
how many times in this thread does drew throw out there that bush won
we're not idiots, we know and we are aware that since he did, half the people in america couldn't have voted against him
the fact that i had to wait an extra few seconds for this page to load cause you littered it with garbage drives me nuts
it's a fun site, with people who don't like bush, poking fun and saying to the world "hey, just remember if you ever get pissed at americans that there are some of us out there who don't agree with everything that goes on"
and for the record
i dont' know how it is in other states but here in texas, just about everyone i know who voted bush voted for trivial reasons without watching a single debate or reading up on the candidates
most were just like "yah bush, he's the best"
since i live in a state like this, my vote is worth less than someone who lives in a smaller state
so does my 1 vote count less than someone's from maine?
and honestly, who really cares, he's president, let's move on, i looked at all the sites and chuckled at them all (not exactly for the same reasons, but i did laugh)
later

blah blah blah     I'm bitter Bush won   blah blah blah      the fact that i had to wait an extra few seconds for this page to load cause you littered it with garbage drives me nuts     blah blah blah

Have I told you lately that Bush won  :o    ;D

Mebbe if Kerry had won, you'd have been able to afford a new computer that would load your page faster.  As it is, Bush won, and if it helps you sleep at night, he's responsible for your page not loading as fast as it should.  And it'll stay that way.  For     four     more     years  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ya know what I do while waiting for this page to load?  I go out in the back yard and fire my assault weapon in the air several times.  When I'm done, I come back in, and the page has loaded!

Oh, and as far as littering the page with garbage, you must have NEVER read any of Floyd's posts.  He's a first-class litterbug.  But we love him nonetheless.....psssst, if you wanna be REALLY cool, do like I do and call him James St James Jr.  He SOOOOO digs that.....his little legs just get racing like...wait, that's my dog when I scratch her belly.

What was this about?

Oh, I like pencils when they are sharpened.  Number 1 pencils are the best, and you shouldn't have to conform to this Number 2 world.

Wax makes a terrible prophylactic.
