There is nothing like cutting your life in half by drinking and smoking an awful lot. Not to mention driving to work in the morning.  ;)

So leisure trips that otherwise would count as relaxation get counted against me here.

I wonder if they're looking at the car as a stress producer, or a risky behavior.

i would say stress producer...

Hence all the accident-related deaths every year where the police say "this could have been avoided by the use of a safety belt."

You might only need it 1/10000th of your driving life, but damn if you don't REALLLY need it then.

People who fit in the "don't wear seat belt category" also fin in the "most likely to drive like an idiot and crash category" Thus we see it in the news more often...Call it natural selection.

It doesn't bother me when people fail to wear seatbelts and they die as a result of the crash.  Thier death doesn't really cost the taxpayers or the healthcare system any time or money.  Since they're dead, they don't need medical care.  It's when they fail to wear a seatbelt and survive the accident that it pissed me off.  Because then they survive and put a burden on our healthcare system and us taxpayers have to pay for it.  (I'm in a bit of tax piss off mood right now.  I looked at my final paystub for the year and saw that this year I had more taken out in taxes than my annual pre-tax salary was the first year I worked full time!!!!)

So I think that if a cop comes across an accident scene where someone wasn't wearing a seatbelt and the person has survived, they should just shoot them in head and kill them.  :P ;D

Here in Florida the cops have a right to ticket people who are not wearing their seat belt, this is ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow---.

Motorcycle drivers are able to not wear a helmet here and not get bothered about it. If a person wants to not wear a seatbelt it should not be of anyone's concern and surly not needing a ticket for it.

a bit more uniform in oz. you can get booked for not wearing a seatbelt or not wearing a helmet (when on a motorbike naturally) anywhere in australia. i think most states you can get booked for talking on a mobile phone while driving too.

the main reason as stated above is the burden to society when people are injured. even if they die outride it is a burden since presumably that person had dependants, or worked or both etc.

We can't get people to stop downing a fifth of Jack and driving.  What hope do we have of making people wear a belt?

Ticket and fine for both not wearing a seat belt or not wearing a helmet.  Of course, with public health care, we kinda try and keep people from hurting themselves, even if they're too stupid to do it themselves.

You know, you bring up a good point here indirectly. With states that have seatbelt laws, wouldn't motorcycles be illegal? ;)

Nothing pisses me off more than when a punk kid is out on his rice burner driving like a maniac. If he ---smurfs--- up anywhere near me on the road, I would be held responsible because it is the motorvehicle drivers responsibility to be aware of motorcyclists.

Amend the law so that if caught driving without a belt - you permanently get changed to organ donor status.  Ditto cycling without a helmet.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

They could change it so the first penalty is $5000 - second penalty is a testicle or a breast.  People still wouldn't care.

maybe they wont, but so long as they are paying the fines they are contributing towards the costs they will incur when they end up a drooling vegetable...
