Free web design/creation software?
« on: October 12, 2004, 12:18:21 pm »
Does such a thing exist?  I am awful at updating my site, and the main reason is I use notepad and frankly I hate doing it  :P  Perhaps if I could get some helpful but simple web design software I might be inclined to update my site a bit more often...

Why don't you download a free "full evaluation" version of Dreamweaver? You'll never use anything else once you switch. It even writes really clean code because it's bakend is Homesite.

I don't know, if you're used to typing out html into notepad, the code dreamweaver puts out looks pretty inefficient sometimes. Back when I tried out Dreamweaver, I lost all the time I saved when I had to redo all the sloppy code.

I did notice with some other package I once used that it seemed to add tons of un-needed code, which put me off at the time...

I think I might have Frontpage at work - I'll give it a look, as well as html kit.  Thanks guys :)

I always used Arachnophilia as a free HTML editor, it's very simple to use if you're used to writing HTML.

I made the switch to DreamWeaver a couple of years ago, and I think it's great. Yes, it did use to make some sloppy code, but I think it's cleaned up a lot in the last few versions.
It adds small pieces of extra code for DreamWeaver specific things, like Library items (these are snippets of code that you can use repeatedly throughout your site, so you just need to update the Library item once and it updates in every page of the site). But there is an option to remove all the DreamWeaver specific code before uploading pages.

FrontPage always messes with your code. Dreamweaver used to be the same way too, but after they aquired HomeSite that fixed all of it. Homesite was the best text based editor on the market, now it's the code side of Dreamweaver.

I would go into the HTML and make changes in FrontPage and when I viewed the page it would change the code back to how it had written it.

BTW I used to code in notepad too back when the internet was young.. 1995

Creating templates and library files in DW is great. You make one change to the file/template and your whole site is updated.

Yea, Dreamweaver is great.  Same site as Notepad, but 2-3 times the code!  <shudder>

Here's a good suggestion for a free editor:

I use Mozilla Composer. It's an alright WYSIWYG editor.
I love the life I lead. I wish I could afford it.

I use textpad - slightly better than notepad, but not WYSIWYG at all. I've used dreamweaver in the past, but don't like the extra code it adds, but it can be good to quickly come up with a page - same thing goes for frontpage.
