9200-based ArcadeVGA + Jpac, garbled display
« on: August 31, 2004, 08:57:57 am »
I've posted this to the board at Ultimarc.com, so apologies if you frequent both and see this twice...

I have a recently completed MAME cab using an MX-440 and a J-PAC which works fine using AdvanceMAME. I recently decided to buy an ArcadeVGA card to eliminate all those doubled up displays (and also so I can use DOS MAME, which seems a bit simpler)

When the card arrived I was pleased to see that it's one of the new 9200 based cards.

However when the ArcadeVGA card is installed I can't get it to display anything on my 15Khz monitor. I can get the picture so it is slowly rolling vertically, and if I invoke my motherboard (Epox 8KTA3+- KT133A based) BIOS menu the picture becomes predominantly blue, so I know the PC is working, but the picture is just horizontally-distorted gibberish as pictured below. I have seen a simlar display when the AdvanceMenu front end was set to 1024x768 when using my MX440. No combination of monitor adjustments seems to stabilise the display.

The sync light on the J-PAC never lights up with the ArcadeVGA connected and using the VGA cable supplied with the J-PAC. I have tried the jumpers on the JPAC set to 15khz only, and 15khz+31khz, and have also tried the jumper on the ArcadeVGA set to both NTSC and PAL (it was set to PAL when supplied).

When I plug my MX440 back in everything works as fine. I'm stumped.... any ideas?

If you haven't done it already, take your resolution down as far as you can on your PC.  Then try it.  Those arcade monitors are CGA not Superhi Res. You have to set it at the lowest setting you can.

Look and see where the sync's are on the monitor.  I don't know if that's an arcade monitor, but there is positive and negative sync.

If setting you res very LOW doesn't work, keeping your res as low as you can, use the other set of syncs.

Now keep in mind I'm not an expert, but that's what I'd do.

I can't even get it to display the PC startup/BIOS screen, so I don't think lowering the resolution would help.

As I say, everything works fine with my previous graphics card- a Geforce MX440. I bought the ArcadeVGA so that I can eliminate all the doubled up displays. If I plug the MX440 back in, everything works hunky-dory.

try removing the J-Pac. The J-pac has the built in Video AMP and in my setup (I have a NEW WG-19k7203 monitor) if the Video AMP is connected is mess up. I also have an AVGA card and I use it w/out the VidAmp and it works, I see the POST/Boot screen, but if I hook it up w/VidAmp, display is rolling like crazy. At first during testing w/Santoro (he has a D9200) we thought it was the VidAmp causing the problem so I e-mailed Andy and gave me a replacement. When i got the replacement, its the same thing. I am beggining to think that the Video AMP is not comaptible w/NEW WG monitors. Anyone out here use the Video AMP w/ NEW WG monitors that works ?

Right now, I am having issues w/AVGA w/my Advmame Pure DOS. I can't seem to get it going, so like yourself I plug the OLD Video Card w/my Arcade VGA Cable hack and of to play I go. Looks like I'm gonna keep it this way, it is a new monitor and it birght enough so I can live w/out the Video AMP. Good Luck.
