Marble Mania Mame Project - 99% DONE - NEW PICS 10/25
« on: August 27, 2004, 11:41:09 pm »
Old Bad Dudes machine conversion. First attempt at a Mame machine, go easy on me!   :P

BEFORE PICS

UPDATED 10/25/04 - 99% DONE

SlikStik added to the cab, 25" WG CGA monitor added, running a P4 with 512Ram, Bits Unlimited power strip, 5.1 sound with subwoofer.

Sorry the pics of the marquee are a bit washed out from low light in the room.  Marquee artwork original by myself in Photoshop, printed at mamemarquees.com, great job Scott! Very nice quality.

Running Mame with MameWAH frontend. You can see the customized layout scree for MameWAH I designed to match the Marble Mania theme.

Will probably add some sideart and some CP graphics of somekind, but for now it ROCKS BABY!   WOOHOO! Finally done! Man did I miss these old games!  ;D

BTW: iI saw one or two others that mentioned they had used an old Bad Dudes cabinet. Anyone got any pics of what they did with it? Thanks.

Well, you have a JAMMA harness in there already.  Get an arcade monitor and a J-PAC, wire it CORRECTLY (including fuses and an isolation transformer) and you'll have the start of something!

I actually built a MAME machine from Bad Dudes machine. The first thing to know is...

Unfortunately, Bad Dudes control panels are CRAP! They're metal and the layout doesn't provide good use. It was barely good enough for bad Dudes. If you'll notice, the buttons (and joysticks) are set at an angle. This makes it useless for 4-way games because up is more like "up and to the right". Also, the buttons on either side are nice for lefties, but useless for anyone else. In the original game they were just mirrored. But in any other game, you can't be reaching across the joystick from both sides to reach all your buttons. That being said...

You'll find yourself having to replace the control panel or drill it out from scratch. However, if the latter is the case, you're probably just as good off with making a new one.

I built a pretty big "franekpanel" over mine, but it fit well (at least better than most). If you don't want more than SF controls, you can fit them cramped on the control panel. However, if you want virtually anything else you'll need to build some sort of attachment.

I'll try to get a picture posted of the Bad Dudes machine of mine.

I have already stripped the cabinet pretty bare including the CP. It's way to small and I want a nice 2 player setup with trackball, etc. So I will be doing a similar Frankenpanel setup to yours.

What size monitor did you put in it? I am going to try and get a 25" med. res. monitor crammed in the 24" space somehow. The dimensions are just a bit less than 24" for a 25" monitor.

Sanding and priming today, paint going on soon. There will be lot's of custom graphics on this machine since my friend owns a sign shop and can cut anything out of vinyl or full color print for me.   ;D

I will start laying out the graphics next week. If you can post a pic that would be great! Thanks.

Sigh...I know I know....the purists here just can't stand the CP.  The picture actually makes it look much larger than it actually is, like a fisheye lens effect for some reason.

But thanks for the nice comments anyway!  Sigh...

I just picked up a Data East cab, and it had soo many holes in the original metal cp, that I've decided to frankenpanel mine too.

Looks very good!

Are you left handed?

No? The setup is perfect. I would much rather use my left hand for the joystick and right hand for the buttons.  This SlikStiik is an awesome CP!

Just needs some graphics which I am working on.

I think he was referring to the trackball placement?
Anyways, marquee turned out great!

I think it looks great, personally.
And c'mon, it is a bad dudes cabinet. .... bad... dudes...

the word "classic" doesn't fit anywhere in that last statement.

Its not like he hacked up a centipede or tapper or asteroids or tempest or pacman or any REAL classic.

bad dudes.... I doubt anyone will ever say, "I've really been looking for a bad dudes cabinet so I can restore it!"

LOL

good work.

Of the 300 or so trackball arcade games made roughly 100 of them were ambidextrous (trackball in center, buttons on both sides), 198 of them had the buttons on the left side, and the remaining 2 didn't have any buttons.

That is why I ask if you are left handed.

This is innteresting..... I obviously use my mouse with my right hand. But if I was playing a trackball game I'd use my left hand on the TB and the right hand for the buttons. It just feels totally natural to me that way. I've designed my cab with the TB in the middle and dual using buttons 1 and 2 on player 2 side for the buttons.

I dont think I could play a TB game with the buttons on the  left!

Ahh...trackball. Never even gave it a thought. It felt natural to use the trackball that way. In Windows, trackball with left and mouse buttons on right is comfortable.

As far as the cabinet goes, your right. It was a BAD DUDES cab. I rescued it from the dumpster. I chose it especially for the curved marquee, it is cool!

Thanks for the comments.

if you need to use the trackball with your right hand, you can use the p1 buttons for your buttons. The angle might be a little off, but it'll work.
