Project: InFlux
« on: August 17, 2004, 01:20:47 pm »
Well, I've held off on posting my project due to a lack of cool name for the project/cabinet.  However, I have finally settled on InFlux and you can see pics of the WIP at http://www.poweroftheforce.com/cabinet.

Nothing spectacular mind you...just a lot of clean up of a generic Jamma cabinet (lots of sanding, painting, gutting, and rewiring a new Jamma harness in place) and a new control panel which isn't complete...but complete enough for my son to play spiderman and pacman. :)

Have a good idea that I want to base the artwork on ROM's Fusion, but I need to find the right font for what I'm looking to do.  Also, now that I look at the cabinet, don't know if the light blue was the way to go...may need to re-think that.

Thanks for looking, and thank you for all the information this site has!

Looks good so far are you leaving the front blue?

I painted it blue, so yes, I probably will leave it that color unless I choose a different T-molding color...trying to keep it matched up.

hmmmm. The all black looked better in my opinion, but to each his own I guess. What kind of cabinet was that before you got it?

That's the nice part about paint...if I don't like it, $5 bucks can change that. :)  The reason for the different color was to make the coin doors stand out a bit more when they're re-installed.  With it all black, the detail below the cp was lost, especially when the cp is installed.

The cabinet came to me as World Class Bowling Deluxe.  Looks like it may have been a Golden Tee at one point, and the screen has some minor burn in of what looks to be the Game Over screen for Vendetta.

Well, here's the first shot for a marquee.  Granted, it needs to be cropped, but hopefully you get the idea.  Of course, it is basically ROM's Fusion graphic, which I really like.  All I did was add the text...

Man, it sounds like such a cheap way out...maybe down the line I'll actually design something...

It looks ok...I would move the Pac man pic from the letter X...the name should stand out clearly.

I disagree.

I think the pac-man tile in front of the X makes the name look more integrated into the design.  Although something's wrong w/ the x and that tile (IMO)..   I just can't place it... :(

Well, this is where I am so far...

You can see the whole build process at http://www.poweroftheforce.com/cabinet

I'm still not done, and let's say this last push has taught me how to do things right the next time I do this.

1) Choose the right bit to cut out the holes...I used 1 1/4" and not 1 1/8"...big mistake.

2) When purchasing an overlay, make sure there is a good inch excess on each side.  I had the top and bottom oversized, but the left and the right were spot on.  Of course, when applying it, I had to pull it up once and screwed up the lamination.  It will be covered, but still...

3) Choose a color scheme and stick with it.  I knew I wanted the fusion graphic included, but went ahead with the light blue paint and light blue T-molding...it doesn't match.  So, black it is (waiting on the T-molding).

4) Attach the joystick bases BEFORE you apply the overlay.  I have some puckering due to the T-nuts/putty/screws.  Not too bad, but I notice it.

5) The laminate shows fingerprints.  Yes, it's protecting the vinyl artwork, but it will start to look crappy if not cleaned quickly.

6) The Kinkos marquee, while nicely printed out on backlit film looks washed out and crappy.  How does mamemarquees.com print theirs out?

Overall, I'm okay with how it's turning out, but the perfectionist in me knows I'm going to be fixing these soon because they will bug me to no end.  Plus the fact that my wife has pretty much had it with me working on this thing (not to mention the money spent).

Oh, and the PacMan above the X.  I've gone ahead and kept it.  I've modified it a little bit in that there is more of a shadow, so it looks like it's further away from the x than before.

So, coin doors and new T-molding are next...

It looks great so far.  I was wondering what was wrong with the marquee I just figured you didnt take the Plexi protection cover off.  Ya you need to talk to mamemarquees or emdkay and get a new it will look 1000 times better.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of.  I actually asked them if that's what it was supposed to look like after printing.  Seems it should have been printed on BOTH sides...

It actually looks "okay" when lit up.  Problem is the flash obscures the marquee.

Looks like I'll be ordering a new marquee.  At least it's only $15 or so I've lost.  The control panel overlay Kinkos printed came out really nice looking though. :)

Thanks,
Ed

I love how the control panel artwork goes down onto the front of the CP, very cool.

Do most people get their marquees printed special? I was under the impression that you could get it printed on decent paper on one side and it would look alright backlit. Do you really need both sides printed, or a special back lit paper?

Well, considering this is an ancient topic, I thought I would just update it with the final picture of the cabinet in it's resting place with it's 27" monitor.  Had the basement finished and put a home theater in as well.

Now to do a real nice cocktail, and maybe find some dedicated games to really refurb back to their original glory.

Nice cabinet, but damn... you bumped it from 2004?

I guess you got the itch to come back after seeing the slashdot article?

No...been reading and lurking, but not posting.  Surprisingly, I don't read /.

Been focused on my theater for a while, and literally just finished this up this past month wiring up the lights on the coin doors, cleaned up the inside wiring that I had been neglecting, etc.  I guess I wanted some closure on the topic (odd, I know).

So, apologies for bumping, but figured it would be accepted instead of opening up a second topic on the same thing. :)

Nice home theater setup. What are you using for a projector? And, since it looks a little close to standing height, how's the noise level (fan noise) being that close?

Wow...thanks for the compliments!  Guess I'm hanging around AVSFORUM too much...I thought this was pretty simplistic.

As for what I consider badass, there are a few:

http://artsonneborn.com/
http://www.winglake.com/NHCTheater.asp

As for the equipment:

Sony VPL-VW50 1080p SXRD Projector (*very* quiet...I don't even hear it)
104" Carada Brilliant White Screen
PS3
Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD
D*TV HD-TiVO
Samsung DVD (never gets used)
Pioneer Elite VSX84-TXSi receiver
JBL speakers
HTPC which I built, currently housing DVD and HD SAT rips.
Pioneer LaserDisc player (I just refuse to let this one go).

Overall, I love watching HighDef movies in there...I think we rarely go out to the theater now.  Matter of fact, I have my younger son interrupting me wanting to watch somthing at the moment.

It's easy to impress a bunch of guys that wire together normally open switches, paint MDF, mount monitors on plywood, and hack 5 watt PC amplifiers.  Turning the tables, I bet they guys at AVSFORUM would be blown away by your cab.

Nice job on both.

That theater looks fantastic. What are the dimensions of that area where you have it set up? I've been lurking around avsforum for ideas lately, but every time I see something I like (such as anytime I see those Berklines!!), all I can hear is my wife nagging at how that money could've gone to something else.

I'm also going to cut my teeth on the woodworking before I start framing a section of the basement. And THAT is my excuse for building a cab!

Great job on both!

Hey there...

Dimensions are 11x20.  Considered small by the avsforum crowd, and I'm not particularly happy with the soffit position (not thought through appropriately).  Although it does follow the magic dimensions (nothing evenly divisible in the dimensions).

Next house will be better. :)  Namely, sealed off from the rest of the house so I can watch movies without disturbing the family in the other room in the basement.  Also a dedicated stage, maybe a cinemascope screen, anamorphic lens, electronic masking...

For now though, it's fine. :)

Excellent, that's roughly the same size I'll be working with. The section I'll be converting is about 14x19. I'm interested in that AV rack too. Any details on that? Hell, I'd be interested in seeing the build process of the basement if you have them!  :applaud:

The rack is from Middle Atlantic and has custom made shelves.  You can check the database on their site to see what measurements they have.

I bought from stayonline.com.  Probably the least expensive of the options, but you're talking about 100-120 per custom shelf.  Standard rackmount items fit fine without a shelf.

Rack is a SLIM-5.  It's shipped broken down and takes about a half hour to assemble.  Wouldn't do it any other way now.  Much better than having a standard rack shipped and brought down (or up) stairs.

As for build process...really can't help out there. :(  Check out AVS as they have a whole forum dedicated to buildout. :)
