DOOM 3 - Official Thread
« on: August 02, 2004, 06:55:23 pm »
http://www.ua-corp.com/

5 years in the making and its time to rock.

The demo should be out a lil after Tuesday so if you dont know if this game is your style or if it will run alright on your system give the demo a try.

I am a lil disappointed about the no co-op but ive seen some mods in progress to enable it so that cool.

If you guys want to talk about strategy our need some help after launch than ask here since ill be glued to my pc after tomorrow and will probably be able to help.

It'll only be a few days/weeks/months until the Mod community has makes everything you ever wanted in the game available.

I have my copy already!!!!  :P

I'll be installing it in the morning.  I can't wait. I was going to do it tonite, but then I wouldn't sleep at all.

As for the leaked version, a while back an alpha version (actually not even an alpha, just a special E3 build) was leaked.  I got it off of my college network and was able to get it up and running but it was obviously slow and buggy.  I'm really excited to see what the final build turned out like.

I just hope my system can handle it.

I've been playing it for a few hours now (I think I'm on the third or fourth level) and all I can say is:
BELIEVE THE HYPE!

Creeping through corridors with a flashlight waiting to hear something groan so you can switch to a weapon as quickly as possible really keeps you on edge. Actually, it's kind of stressful; you breath a big sigh of relief once a level is complete and the next starts loading!
Ahhhh.....

I tried to play it, but my sad GeForce 2 (64MB) at the lowest setting still can't keep up with this game.  :'(

Yeah that'll do fine. I got a new Radeon 9800 Pro from NewEgg last week and it runs great, though I did need to tidy up my PCs cables, install another fan and bigger power supply (due to the Radeons power requirements and some overheating).

whats the wattage on your power supply?  im going to order a new 9800pro as well but i didnt know how much power i would need.  i have 2 HD's, a cd/dvd rom drive and a cd burner running.  as well as about 4 fans.  how much power will i need to run the 9800pro?

also, i have another lcd flat panel monitor that im going to hook up to my new graphics card so i can run dual monitors....its not for gaming really, just cuz the lcd is a free monitor from my mom and i wanted to use it.  so i really dont care if i can use it in games or not, but im wondering if will effect the performance graphically if i have both monitors up and running on doom 3?

ATI recommends at least a 300w PSU for most users with a R9800Pro. My old PSU was a 300w Antec, I have 4 HD's, a DVD burner and two case fans on an A7N8X-E Deluxe with an AthlonXP2700+.
The 300w came close, but the system was just a little too unstable with the R9800pro installed. It could be that voltage fluctuations were the cause of my troubles and not lack of power, my old PSU was running a little hot anyway. I upgraded to a 420w Thermal Take Silent Pure Power PSU and things have been fine since.

Turning on both monitors while playing a game won't really affect gameplay at all.  It will just be on thats all.  You won't be able to move your mouse to it, and depending on the setup of your dual monitors, it may change resolution on ya because of the game.

One good use for dual setups and gaming is hints/walkthroughs on one screen, game on the other.  Only problem is scrolling through the hints if it's a long document... you're kinda out of luck there, unless you wanna keep CTRL-Tab'ing or exiting the game.

Regarding the dual monitor thing, in all of my experience using dual monitors with games, the game appears on the primary monitor like normal and the secondary monitor just goes black... there is no desktop or anything like that.  The only way you could see the desktop on the second monitor is if you run the game in windowed (as opposed to fullscreen) mode.

Regarding Doom3... wow... it is scaring me to death... they have done an EXCELLENT job of freaking you out in this game.  There are just some plain disturbing things that are gonna make it hard to sleep tonight i think...

Ive been playing all night and the sun is coming up. Ive seen things in the last 12 hours that would make a grown gamer weep. Just a little further almost there ....WAIT what was that? OMG they followed me, its an ambush! HOL^ SH&# run while you can forget about me!!!

;D This game is awesome, its like a cross of system shock 2 and aliens and im totally into it. The sound and lightning are fantastic, but what really gets me are the animations of all the monsters mostly those imps when they get on all fours and lunge at you with those teeth, thats some scary stuff.

1Gb DDR333 (2700) ram
2 40GB hard drives (7200 rpm)
Raedon 9800 pro (will have soon)

ive seen the latest graphics cards with at least a 3 ghz proc cant even run the maxed out settings on this game smoothly.  crazy.  regardless i think my system will run it fine in 1024 x 768 with medium settings.  thoughts?

I've got:

Athlon XP 3000+
1gb of ram (PC3200)
3 HD (200, 120, 60)
ATI 9700 AIW (Over clocked to 9800 speeds :P)

And the game runs smooth for me at 1024 x 768 with almost everything on.

Looks good.

One other thing you should consider is speakers.  I had a 4.1 setup before and upgrade to Logitechs 5.1 z620.  And the game sounds AWESOME!

Hey Hulkster,

I went with the "system recommended settings", which set me at medium detail and 800X600.  I haven't really played around with the settings much to see how high I can take it before I notice any slow down (will try that tonight, at least bumping up to 1024x768), I also have almost everything turned on (In the advanced setting tab there are check boxes, I believe everything is checked with the exception of anti-aliasing).  Again, I'll play around with the settings and see what kind of drop in performance I notice.  It does look FANTASTIC though.  One problem I seem to have (don't know if anyone else has seen this or not), is that occasionally my sound will go away.  I'll be playing and it will get silent (like it is being turned off)...if I go to the main menu and disable and re-enable the sound it is good again...it only happened twice last night (once in the beginning cut scene and then once during game play), just can't figure out why...I'll have to check their website and see if anyone else encounters it.  I'm using a Sound Blaster Audigy card (the first one), with the latest drivers..so who knows.

Oh one other thing I should mention, I read in the latest version of PC Gamer, that Doom 3 is more dependent on your graphics card then your processor, so I would imagine with a 9800pro you should be able to run things very well (although for the ultra settings I would imagine that would require the latest ATI or NVIDIA cards (x800 ATI?? or the 6800 Ultra cards).

Santoro,

Your machine will definitely run it (I think the minimum specs are a 1.5 ghz processor, Geforce 4MX, 384 mB of ram, etc)...again that is just the minimum specs, but your system is well about those.  It automagically detects what system you are running and sets the levels appropriately (of course this doesn't mean that you can't tweak them), you won't be able to run at the Ultra settings, but I've been told that the game looks amazing even on the minimum levels.  I imagine with your setup that you should be able to run with a number of the options turned on.  Again, I haven't had much chance to tweak the settings (dang work gets in the way of what's really important  ;)), but hope to play around with it a little tonight.  Hope this helps.  :)

When I play games on my dual monitor setup, my second screen doesn't go black.  I had Doom3 on last nite and my other screen still showed the desktop.

I need to play with my settings as well.  My system is running fine at High quality at 800x600, but I'd like to see how far I can take it :)

Here is my setup

Intel 2.53B CPU
I845PE MOBO
512MB PC3200
Radeon 9500 NP 128MB
On board AC97 Sound (sounds really good for once, no hiccups our stutter)

Video Quality : Medium
Resolution : 800 X 600

Advanced stuff-

High Quality special effects : ON
Specular Lighting : ON
Shadows :  Definitely ON
Bump mapping : ON
VSYNC : OFF
Antialiasing : OFF

Im getting about 30 FPS, the only time it really stutters is around doorways and outdoor areas.

My specs are:

Athlon 2500+ overclocked to 3200+ speeds
1 gig Corsair XMS PC3200
200 gig seagate 8mb cache
Ati Radeon 9800 Pro slightly overclocked

All played on my 18.1" LCD and using my Sennheiser HD580's.  I know that doesn't affect the game, but I <3 my LCD and headphones  ;D

I just ran fraps to double check if 30fps was in my ballpark.

2004-08-04 18:32:13 - doom3
Frames: 7862 - Time: 179031ms - Avg: 43.914 - Min: 10 - Max: 63

Not bad, i was a lil modest when i said 30 i guess :)

I have been hearing alot about how doom3 and half-life are supposed to be better for the next generation of graphics card and run this gens into the ground.  I am just mad that they dont have multi player for pc.  But if you look at the bottom of the box it  talks about multiplayer support and the requirements for it.

Hey guys in the doomconfig.cfg file, change the image_cacheMeg from 20 or 32 or whatever it is, up to something like 96 or 128 (or maybe even more).  It will give you a noticable boost in FPS.

btw, for fps, open the console (ALT CTRL ~) and type com_showfps 1

I've been running the game at Ultra Setting at 800x600 and all is well.  No real slowdowns.  But, I'm getting a little tired of running around and just shooting stuff....  I've been there, done that...

Sure the game has great graphics and sounds amazing.  But the game plays the same as playing Doom I, just with updated graphics.  Run-Shoot-Run-Shoot...

Yes I enabled that tweak and it did give me a nice boost. I set mine to 256, half of my ram. I totally forgot the console command to show fps so thanks for that.

What stage are you on GGKoul?  This game was a lil stale for 2 stages in Delta Labs because i had the imps pattern down cold and would dodge with the sprint key and get point blank with my shotgun and blast em in 1 round. After Delta labs though the story really takes off and you are against some serious adversaries.

Not sure what stage I'm at.... Sure the story takes off, but the game play is still the same.  Run... Shoot... look for PDA to open the door... Sure that was good 8 years ago, as Doom was the only game in town.... But I think my gaming tastes have envoled since then.

Don't get me wrong, I love 1st person shooters... but once you get pass the graphics and that the enemy dodge shots... Doom3 is boring.  Far Cry is a much better game then Doom3.

I can't wait for the Mod community releases some kick ass mods for Doom3.  As I don't see myself playing single player mode much longer .

I dunno man, im enjoying the hell out of it. I wasnt expecting anything revolutionary in terms of gameplay but i wanted to feel like i was part of the action. I feel DOOM 3 has done that and added some very much needed traditional gameplay with some very impressive graphics and sound. All i can say is hang in there since youve boughten the game and see it through a lil farther. Im telling you there is some kick ass stuff coming up.

I think I'll be happy when I can play Doom3 with 32 other people online...

how is that gonna happen?  i thought the multiplayer was only for 4 people.  and i read that the MP was really laggy even across a decent connection?  im sure they will release patches in about a month or so.
