ArcadiA - Update Center
« on: July 12, 2004, 11:17:20 am »
So this weekend a couple things happened:

My drill bit broke off in the wood. That's just ridiculous.

The sides fell off the base as soon as I tried to lift it up for the first time. I had even used 2" by 2" brackets on the underneath before I lifted it to ensure stability. My theory is that 1 1/4" screws attaching the sides to the base aren't long enough . . . I was going to use 2" by my drill bit broke and I decided to make do. Not a good decision. So a whole afternoon wasted basically. Still, I think it may be recoverable since the screw holes didn't rupture, they just pulled the screws out of the holes. The L brackets did bend though.

Also, false start in cutting t-molding. Too much dust to do in the apartment. My girlfriend put her foot down. Now I have to find a place to do it and a way to get the stuff to the place. I do not want to rent a truck again like I did when I bought the wood.

So, not a good weekend.  :( For about a half hour I contemplated giving up. But I won't.

Probably.

wow dude, sounds like you got all excited about building a cab and didnt think ahead about transportation and dust and all that.  you really need a garage or a friend who has one and a truck to get stuff back and forth.  good luck anyway :-\

That's me, all excited.  :o

Anyway, so what I'm going to do is wait until the person who parks next to us in the apartment garage is gone, then pull the car out and park it on the street, then use an extension cord and a step ladder to get power off the ceiling where the automatic garage door opener is, do the slot cutting "real quick," sweep up the dust, and hopefully no one is the wiser.

Good thing I have an elevator.

One thing always makes me scratch my head, all these cabinet plans and whatnot always say to use the L bracket... personally I think they are junk, for a few cents more you can get these brackets, and they are solid as rocks!

And those are sold for use on/in...?  Decking attachment plates, they look like to me, but I'm not positive, clarification, please?

Come to think of it I did find them first when I was building a deck... I never really gave it much thought, but I suppose they might even be galvanized, which would explain why they don't rust when I hit them with water based primer (most steel I have to use areosol primer).  Awesome little brackets.

those reinforced L-brackets looks good... but do they have it in HD or Lowes ?? or Doddy ??...

I don't have much hardware store choices....

and for Dante....

when you put the parts together....

you always need to use the right length screws... (AND GLUE !!!) ... screws by itself (even using the right length...) is not strong enough in the long run....

as for cutting / transporting....

you'll probably need a truck when you buy 4 x 8 pieces....
I tied the 4 x 8 on top of my car's loading bar....

but once you cut them... you don't need a truck anymore...
a sedan with fold down seats will be big enough to carry....
(the biggest piece should be the side piece...)

well.... you should be able to assemble it inside your house....

but garage sounds like a good idea... I use my garage as work space too....

Yup, they're available at HD.  I'm going to sound like an HD advertisement if I don't stop plugging them though, and I sure am no huge fan of HD!

I'd like to use glue, but it took me five minutes of nudging to get the sides square with the base. Any advice on getting glue in there for when I try, try again? I hoped it wouldn't be a big deal because Project Arcade doesn't mention glue for the side-base attachment and it does for every other part of assembly.

I think I was just careless.  :( Next time I will use longer screws and I will stand it up starting with it like this   ll   instead of like this    =

ok..... when you put pieces together....

first... you line them up... (at this point... no screws... no glue...) just place them together and make sure they fit...

now... in your case..... lay the side piece flat on a table or something.... and then put the bottom piece on.... (its standing up like a 90 defree angle...) you might want to use scrap pieces of wood to help align.... or masking tape... or duct tape.... or clamps...

then put some glues on the contacing surfaces... and place it on the spot.... then screw it in..... after you screw it in... you can wipe off the excess glue that got sequeezed out....

if you want... a couple of those L brackets at the bottom (where its out of plain view) can be added to help hold it together....

then just let it dry....

ok..... now.... in order for you to put the other side piece....
it wouldn't work... right ??... because it'll be like a "U" shape on its side... and it'll collapse... right ??...

then get a few pieces of scrape wood... cut it to the same width as the bottom piece... and make a H shape or I shape...
then you can place the other side piece on top.... and it'll stand on itself... and you can take your time to glue / screw it together...

Thanks for the advice! While reading this, I had an idea ... since there's already screw holes in the side and the base from when I messed it up, I could put thinner screws in the side alone, then line them up with the holes in the base but without screwing them in thereby leaving a little gap, then hold up the side while someone else puts some hot glue inbetween, then lower the side down onto the glue. The thinner screws would pop out and everything would be lined up. Overkill?

hot glue ???.... you mean like those hot glue guns melts plastic tubes hot glue ??

are you using it on wood ??...

if so.... I would suggest no....

when its wood to wood... I would suggest using premium wood glue... (those somewhat yellowish color glue....) and put light coat on both sides..

if its wood and laminate... use contact cement... (again.. apply both side...)

if its plastic... hot glue...

and for plastic / metal / wood mix...

and there are a lot of other glues that can be used.... like those "liquid nails"...  "gorilla glue".... and eproxy (I believe you mix 2 things and then you have like 15 min before it hardens...)

if I mis-understand you... then just ignore me... but I personally think hot glue gun glue is not suggested for raw wood / wood bond....

Actually, there are special glue sticks for hot glue guns designed just for wood-to-wood gluing. I've already used them to make the base and the control panel box (using screws too) and it works great! Only downside is you have maybe three seconds to adjust position before it really starts to stick.

Yeah, those are made for quick easy projects...the heat melts 'em and as they cool they go back to the "stick" state.  Go the bottle route, as it'll give you more "open" time to work your materials.

For all I know, you figured out how to fix this, and I'm replying WAAAAY too late, but go get yourself a bottle of wood glue (Titebond, Elmers, etc) and a small foam brush.  Rip the foam off when you get home, cut several notches ~1/8" across the plastic "paddle" left on the stick, and use that to spread your glue evenly.  Stick pieces together, square it up, and screw it together.  Let dry.

If you're using Gorilla glue or some other waterproof type glue like that, make sure you use clamps, as the stuff expands as it cures.

Appreciate the thought, but you were right, I attached the sides on Monday. I couldn't ever figure out how to get the hot glue in there and still get them on square so I just used the longest screws I could make a hole for and that's working well.

I was going to post on this today anyway just to say I had the day off today and got a lot of work done on the cab! No disasters either, a first for me. I attached like six boards and only have one more to do (the front/coin door) before I can start painting.  :)
