Well here it is in all its glory! My new beast. Many of you would remember the control panel which was finished a while ago. Well after a few weeks of work, here is the finished cabinet.

The cabinet features a 25" Arcade Monitor (which I'm still tweaking to get working right

) and two coin doors which accept $1 coins (yet to be wired up). The power on button and volume control are hidden out of the way on top of the cabinet.

The cab was spray painted using an air compressor and the finish is so good it is like a mirror. I have to thank my buddy Ernie for the paint work

Your control panel really sets the tone for that cab, loving it.

Be careful not to scratch that paint if you have to move it around...

I gotta say, I hate oversized panels...but I LOVE your cab! I may end up building a duplicate...if you're OK with it?

Anyway...great job! You've changed my mind...not an easy task.

I'll try and put up a small page or two showing the construction. The cabinet was actually an old arcade cabinet that I got from an amusement company. Here are some shots of the cabinet when I first picked it up: http://members.lycos.co.uk/stuzza12/newcab/newcab.htm

It was stripped, had the front door replaced and completely "done up" so it looks new. However the style of cabinet would be really easy to duplicate for anyone who would want to build one from scratch.

I like the cabinet because it is large, but not too large, especially when it has to go in my bedroom for the time being! The control panel is also very comfortable for 2 players without being too over bearing (ie. it ain't no Franken Panel

).

For info there is an auction of old cabs and equipment on at Amuzementworx on Magill Rd on Sunday 18th July at 11 am.

I'm going to try and get there for a look see.

Yep, I've known about this for a while. I should be there with a couple of friends to have a look. Not sure If I'll get anything, but will be fun to go to my first auction.

you got any more details about the paint process? I know u said your friend used an air compressor, but what kind of paint was it and is the application very difficult?

I second that...I've used a sprayer a few times on cabinets and panels, and have never been able to get a finish like that!!! Must be automotive paint or something!

Also, I really have to put that graphic back up on my site, I never thought anyone would use it, much less make such an awesome theme out of it... top notch!

Can I be a critic? Everyone loves a critic... so here I go:

It looks very nice overall. But that over-sized control panel looks like it's just "sitting" on the rest of the cabinet. Know what I mean? It's not integrating into the overall design of the cabinet. -1

You're going to regret that super-gloss paint soon. I can already see fingerprints on the front of your control panel. Scratches, smudges and other marring will show up quite easily. -1

Other than that, great job. I give it an 8/10.

Oh no a critic! LOL

I have to disagree with your first comment. It's hard to get a good idea from the few shots I posted, but I think that the control panel fits in just fine with the rest of the cabinet. Firstly the colours match perfectly and the T-moulding makes it tie in with the actual cabinet. Yes it does just sit on the cabinet , but heck, just about all the arcade cabinets I've seen which are a similar upright style to this all have CP's which are removable and just sit in there. Besides, I didn't build the cab from scratch, it was an old empty cab I picked up. The original CP on the cab looked horrible and fitted in even less. You are right about the gloss paint though, it does scratch fairly easy and can show up finger prints if the light is at the right angle. However, hopefully most people will be putting their fingers all over the top of the control panel and not everywhere else. Just a small price to pay for an awesome looking paint job

I'm just talking about the aesthetics... continuity of the lines, etc. Would be nicer if the CP didn't extend out the sides. Like this:

That cabinet is nothing like the style of mine? I think my cab would look very weird if I attempted to build a CP "into" the cabinet, it just wasn't designed that way. I have mamed a couple of Lowboy cabinets which are small cabinets with a similar look to the one you've pictured and the main problem with them is lack of space for 2 players - there just isn't any!

I'll actually be posting some pics of a lowboy cabinet I have recently done up for work which I had to enlarge the CP area of just to fit on enough buttons and make it a bit more comfy for 2.

I guess aesthetics are always gonna be a personal thing.

Oh I know. It's form VS functionality. Like with my own cab, I had to sacrfice having a trackball, cuz my CP is so small... I refuse to extend it out!! heheh
