A UK Cocktail Cabinet (More or less Finished!!!)
« on: May 27, 2004, 01:44:18 pm »
Here are some piccies of my unfinished cocktail cab. It is based on the design I purchased on www.gamecabinetsinc.com with a few of my own customisations. This is the first time I have done any carpentry since school, being the ripe old age of 34 now. Would love to get some feedback.

hi i'm in the uk also and will be starting building my own cocktail cab soon. currently trying to get everything together first. i like the look of your speaker covers - where did you get them?

also...is the piano hinge one of those with L bend in it to allow screwing into MDF? if it is, where did you get it?

Hi,

The speaker grill is from www.maplin.co.uk. Search for "Speaker grill" and up it pops on the list.

The pinao hinge is a normal piano hinge I got from B&Q. There is 2 on the cab. One on the side as seen in the pic and another for the cabinet top.

Had no problems with 'splitting' MDF. Just ensure u pre-drill your holes.

Cheers

Those plans look a lot like Kyle Linstrom's Pac plans, which are available for free.

where did you get the coin door/mech? is there plenty of room for the mech in the cab?

I got the coin door from Happs. There is plenty of room in the cab for all the components. Will take a piccie later today and post to show u the insides of the cab. The monitor is resting on a shelf. Its got quite a small back so leaving loads of room for the bits.

The plans I used were very comprehensive (around 60 pages) and full of colour pics. I looked at other plans that were free and decided to take a gamble and buy those from www.gamecabinetsinc.com. Best thing I done!!

very nicely done!  Don't do what everyone else does(myself included), get it working then never finish it   ;D  Look forward to seeing the CP's installed.

how much was the coin door? (Happ only have US prices on their website)

i see that details say it comes with 25c coin mechs, is this true? is there a UK mech version? what coins does it accept? did you have to buy additional UK spec mechs?

or can the supplied 25c coin mech be adjusted to accept other
coins? in particular the BYOAC .984" Tokens?

the only concern i have is that my monitor is pretty deep (19" from front of tube to back) so bit concerned that will be short of space for the coin box and motherboard.

i would like to see your photos of the inside.

cheers,
richard

10p....... it was just 1 screw to move. works a treat. instructions come with the coindoor, once you get into it - you can convert it to take any coin....... you just adjust the width, height, magnetic pull etc.... sounds hard - but its simple

I would be interested in a pic of the cabs insides - particularly interested to see how much space you've got with the coin door/mechs installed.

my monitor is pretty big so bit concerend whether i would have space for a mini coin door.

I was going to ask you where you got your laminate sheets or laminated plywood, as I'm in the Uk and can't seem to find some.. then I saw that it was made from MDF with that roll on fablon stuff... looks amazing, well done

I used that a few years ago to turn some old black speakers into nice light wooden ones to match our new living room, lol

Looking good, two comments,

1) Did you use a creative 2.1 system for sound? I have one but don't think I can fit it, and I'm worried that the unshielded sub so close to the neck will affect the picture.

2) Not to rag on your design, but why does the top of the control panels stick over the edge like that? Mistake or intended?

my coindoor has finally arrived from Happ (took absolutely ages!) - I went for exactly the same type as you. i see it has funny square mounting holes. but didn't come with any bolts. did yours come with anything?

if not what did you use instead?

now to figure out how to adjust the mech to accept UK coins....

is there a way to make it accept all coins regardless of shape and weight?

i am thinking of getting some of those BYOAC tokens but not sure whether will work with the happ mech.

i guess you're using M4 size carriage bolts?

i suppose only able to get chrome ones at B&Q - figure i'll have to paint them black to match the door.

cab is only in bits so far but should be together soon - then will start posting some picks. need to order my glass next.

did you go for regular glass or get toughenned? best quote i got for toughenned clear is 60 quid or grey tinted 85 quid!

thanks - im pleased with the outcome, but i might start looking for a bigger screen to put in it (probably take upto 28" screen - but not sure if that would be too heavy).  then i can put the current screen in aonther (smaller cab)....

sorry to hear you're out of action for a while - hope you get better soon.

(PS. for US readers - he was playing soccer!)

Well had this cabinet for over a year now and thought it was in time for a bit of an MOT.

I never actually like the control panels the way I did them on this cabinet so I have re-done them as can be seen in the pics.

I have taken the 1p and 2p buttons off the control panel and put them on the side.

I have re-adjusted the position of the monitor and secured it more firmly.

Also took the horizontal control panel off as I wanted to make this just a vertical 1v1 cabinet  ;D

Hi Boyo, I'm in the UK too, South Wales, thought you might have been from Wales with a name like boyo but see you are in Kenilworth.  I think we should get arcade controls to start a UK forum, I am going to suggest it now.
