New Project. Codename Fullmetal Mame!
« on: June 06, 2005, 10:57:58 am »
I wanted to build a unique cab for a while but it seems everything had been done.  I have a real problem with wood working  it's so unforgiving and the end result is so heavy and cumbersome. It takes me and a few friends just to move my  Sega Laser Ghost dedicated cab, which is a pain the way my Fiance likes to rearrange things once a month. So i started looking into lighter materials. I've found a good happy medium of price and weight  in 0.040" aluminum sheet. I thought i was gonna have a lot of hammering and forming to get the round corners I wanted, but as luck would have it my dad just got a set of sheet metal rollers(makes a nice round bend any radius you want), a shrink/stretch tool (for making curves in a bent piece), and an english wheel (makes complex curved pieces)  so that's gonna cut my finger bashing   hours with a hammer and bag to a minimum.
here's a quick look at what the cab will have

4 player control panel based loosely on slik stik quadra
27"- 33" monitor
all aluminum  framework  and outer panels
stereo sound with subwoofer
Airbrushed artwork on all panels
wireless networking
and  some special designs for lighting

that's all for now i'm gonna work on some sketches with illustator hopefully have some pdfs to post

If it's going to be light-weight and have a monitor that large, make sure it's not top-heavy. Otherwise I think it's a great idea. Is it gonna have a Fullmetal Alchemist theme?

The single greatest portion of a cabinet's weight (besides the actual cabinet) is in the monitor, anyways. Would removing the monitor make it easier to move around? That's the ONLY way it looks like I'm going to be moving anything upstairs at home.
