New to Mamewah !
« on: May 25, 2004, 05:33:31 pm »
Hi,

I have used Mame and an old front end called Arcade at Home for years and that has been fine, however I wish to use Mame wah now and I have downloaded the latest version and cannot get it to run the games.
I only use about 100 OLD basic  games like Pacman , Space Invaders etc in a cocktail cabinet and I use Win 98 with mame.exe.

I have installed Mamewah and can 'launch it"- I can then get the menu to point the "Execution Settings" to where my mame.exe is ( which is 'c:\mame\mame.exe', I then go to Rom Paths and point it to my Roms Folder ( which is 'c:\mame\roms') ,I then go to Game List Options and scroll down and hit 'refresh game list', Mamewah then looks as though tit is searching for my games
( as it tells me to wait) and then after about 15 seconds tells me that " No games available".

How do I do it, the read me file is VERY basic and I am a bit stuck, any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Wotto

You've got me  ::)

Sounds like you did everything right...Go into Emulator Settings > List Generation Settings and make sure it is on 'ROM Folder vs Listinfo (M.A.M.E.)'.  Then refresh the list (if you had to change it).

If that fails try the above setting on 'Verifysets vs Listinfo (M.A.M.E.)' & refresh the list again.

(hoping that works....)

Hmmm...

Try the List Generation Method to 'ROM Folder Only' (refresh again).

I don't know what's wrong but it might help narrow it down.  Email me your emu?.cfg file if you like and I'll have a look...

Well don't use MAME32, or DOS MAME.  Any of the Windows commandline variants should be fine - try the standard build from mame.net if you have any doubts...

Hi ,

OK I am getting closer ( I guess)- I changed the List Generation Method and refreshed and I now have my list of games on the screen, I then pressed 1 to start a game ( a game that I know works ) and it said" wait-game loading" and just stopped right there, I actually had to reboot the PC to get out of Mamewah! I tried this 3 times all with the same result.???????

Also, I have my Artwork Path 1 set to c:\mame\snap - where my png images are and I have no screenshots showing up either.

Any more clues out there??

Cheers

1) Sounds like you are using DOS MAME?  Turn 'Show DOS Box' (In Emulator Settings > Execution Settings) to 'Yes' to see...

2) Did you install MAMEWAH or just extract it / copy it from another PC?  Usually this problem is due to PaintX.dll not being registered....

1) Yes.  If that is the case (and it works) then I'd suggest you get the Windows commandline version from www.mame.net

2) Are you using a non-standard layout?  Check that the Artwork # is correct for the path that you have entered.

Hi again,

1) Yes it did work and I got the games to work, however when I exited I got the "FPS Dos box " on the screen that I had to close with the mouse. If I grab the Windows command line version of Mame will that stop this happening? The reason I have not used a Windows version before is that I tried it ( Winmame32 ) and the size of some games on the screen is not as good/large as on the other mame versions I have used- ESPECIALLY on landscape oriented games.

At the end of the day I want a FE that I can put in Start up so that it auto runs when I boot up ( as it is in a cocktail cabinet ) and then shuts down the PC  when I exit it and makes the games all fully controllable from my arcade buttons and sticks- GAMEWAH seems to be my answer?

2) I dont think I am using ANY layout as the background is totally BLACK.

Cheers
for all your help

Yes it will stop that box showing.  The Windows version should be able to display as good as the DOS version.  Some things to try are editing your mame.ini and force a resolution (rather than use resolution auto), and also you may need to make some game-specific ini files to specify resolution.  If you aren't having any luck you might need to add some resolutions to your cards 'available resolution' list - there are video card tweakers available for download - I had to do this before.  Before doing this make sure you are using latest video card drivers of course...

Yes, MAMEWAH can do it - not sure what this GAMEWAH thing is? ;)

Was there a resolution to the artwork problem he was having?  I have finally just downloaded MameWAH to try it out, and have no snaps either.  Did a proper install, and I've got my snaps both in a zip file and unzipped.

No, he didn't email me the CFG file...

If no snaps are showing, usually it means that the 'Artwork #? Image Path' you entered your snap path for (or will have been auto-entered if it is '\mame\snap'), does not match the Artwork # used by the layout....are you using a standard layout?

Yes, standard layout. I've explicily stated the path, so I don't know why it would be a problem.

I wonder if for some reason the paintx.dll didn't install properly...

Run 'regsvr32 paintx.dll' and give it another try.

Cool, I don't know why it did that - obviously should happen automatically on install...

Who's switching?  I'm just trying it out.  It's pretty nice.  But for my cabs, in DOS, ArcadeOS is the way I'm going.

One more question: how many ROM paths can you have, and if you can have more than one, how you do that?  I tried separating them with a ';' and it didn't like it.  Also tried ',' did't like that either.

Basically 1 atm (I know, I know!)...

But for MAME if you set the List Generation Method (in Emu Settings > List Gen. Settings) to 'Verifysets vs Listinfo' then it will use MAME's rom paths from mame.ini.  Tho I guess it won't work atm with 0.84, for obvious reasons  :(
