Several games not working
« on: March 17, 2004, 04:51:58 pm »
I am running MAME 79 and Mamewah frontend on a 750mhz PC. There are some games that just don't work. When I try to run them I just get a black screen. No error message, nothing. I can push escape and I get back to Mamewah. Some of the games are asteroids, spyhunter, xenophobe, and rampage. These games surley can't be to fast for my system since I can run much newer games.  Is there some mystery setting I need to use to get these to work?

Not sure if you're updating from a previous version or not.  Make sure your ROMS are correct for 0.79.  Make sure these games aren't broken in MAME0.79.

Not much of a pattern to the games, bad roms usally will flash a brief error message on a black screen and then MAME exits.  Odd that you seem to be saying the screen stays black until you Escape, though.

I've had this problem for a while now. I thought maybe I ahd downloaded some bad roms so I got an entire 0.79 set from a Lazarus burner. The same games still don't work. I tried different monitor resolutions but that didn't do anything. Any other suggestions?

try running them in the command line. Skip any frontends that your using and start from there.

Sounds like you got some bad roms then, just because a Lazarus burner did it, doesn't mean it's always going to be perfect unfortunately.

I had the same issue a while back, got some new roms, and bam, the games worked again....

Make sure you have "show dos box to auto" in mamwah settings, the dos window gets hidden if you don't and mame may be asking for you to press a key or something.

If the ROMs were bad, there would likely be warnings.

Try changing the games resolution.

When you say games resolution do mean monitor resolution because I tried that. If not could you explain to me how to do it?

I have a problem with some, not all, of the vector games, they run at a resolution that is too high for my monitor (it puts up a box saying out of range).  If they have some artwork around them eg. Battle Zone, they work fine.  If I run them from a command line and get them to come up in a window, they work correctly, so I'm not sure why they are trying to select such a high resolution.

I had the same problem with some of the games you mentioned, so I figured that was your problem.
