Concept Art for 2-player CP
« on: January 31, 2004, 10:06:42 pm »
Even though I haven't even started building my CP yet, I couldn't resist designing some possible art for it.

http://www.animecritic.com/_temp/controlpanel-mockup.jpg (~116kb)

The background was taken from a royalty free stock photo site (though it's too small to print at the size I'd need to, so I'll probably have to render an equivalent myself).  The girl was scanned from a Masamune Shirow artbook.

I haven't thought up a name for my CP yet, but when I do, it'll replace the "Game NOT Over" text.  And if I can't think of anything, I might just stick a MAME logo there or something.

Made a slight modification to the layout (seperated the place for the pause buttons from the coin/start buttons).

Here's a bigger version in case anyone wants more detail:

Thanks for the compliments. :)

I used Photoshop to make the image.  I might do the full-sized version in Illustrator, but I haven't decided yet.

Very awesome looking artwork.  Any ideas on what you want the button colors to be?  I could see a lot of colors contrasting with each other in a good way, and some in a bad way.  And if you have an actual name to the control panel, like its going on a cabinet or something, you could replace that Game NOT Over on the bottom w/ the name of your actual arcade, because it feels a tiny bit out of place.  Like it looks all professional then it has that little quote thingy which just seems out of place of the professional look.
Btw Masamune Shirow art is freakin awesome!   Which art book did you grab that out of?  I'm sure you have it, but if you don't, pick up "Ghost In The Shell" published by Dark Horse over here.  I've got another one of his comics "Orion", super bizarre explanations, very detailed and long.  but extremely cool stuff.
-Looks good, excellent color contrast on the panel

Right now I'm planning blue, purple and black buttons (plus the 1P and 2P buttons, which are white).  I made sure to order at least one of each button colour, so I can see which colours I like best then get more buttons.  Fortunately, button colours are the easiest things to change.

It's a stand-alone controller built to sit on my coffee table (since I use MAME on my HTPC).  I still haven't decided on a name (I was thinking "Arcadia", until I noticed someone else had used it).

Btw Masamune Shirow art is freakin awesome!   Which art book did you grab that out of?

I took it from Intron Depot 3: Ballistics.  There were actually a number of pics in that book I thought would look cool on an arcade layout (mostly chicks with guns; can't go wrong with chicks with guns).  I also have his other two art books (Intron Depot and Intron Depot 2: Blades), but didn't find any pics I liked in those.

I have Ghost in the Shell (first manga I ever bought), and also Appleseed and Black Magic.  Never read Orion or Dominion, though.

Thanks.  I just hope the final version turns out.  :)
