  • Hi...
LOGO.SYS
« on: January 27, 2004, 02:29:24 pm »
Does anyone here know where I can get a generic arcade LOGO.SYS file (That dosen't have "MAME" written all over it) to show at as my cabinet is loading?  I like the MAME ones that were made, don't get me wrong, but my cabinet has much more than just MAME on it so it'd be nice to have one that just said Arcade or even better nothing and just has various arcade characters on it.  Thanks in advance!

I took some screencaps from games and converted em to the right format for logo.sys. These are for win98 only, theres a different procedure if youre on 2000 or XP

1. The purple 'winners dont use drugs' screen it hthe FBI seal
2. several 'for use in countries except the US' variations
3. the williams orange-y 'noise' screen when you strat defender, robotron, et al

and probably some more as well.
When I get home tonight Ill zip em up and do some small samples for here if youre interested

Download it here

The zip has all 20 individual screens, just rename the one you want to logo.sys and copy it to c:\
In the zip theyre actually .bmps, so the pic above called taito.png is really taito.bmp, winners.png = winners.bmp, etc

If youve got a pic youd like to use but dont know how, I can do that, or if youve got a request from a specific game or something, just let me know

WOW, that looks so much better than that STUPID windows startup screen.

Now If I can just get that bar on the bottom to disappear.

Theyre squashed because uh, windows likes it that way? :)
Dunno, the standard is to make a 320x400 bitmap. When its used for startup, it expands it to 640x400. I started with originals at 640width and then squished em to 320 so they'd be normal aspect ratio when used

I havent messed with animated ones in a long time but it is possible. It's not real frame animatin. What it does is cycle thru the first 16(?) colors in the images pallete. Areas that you want to stay static use the colors 17-256. Something like the defender/williams screen should be easy to animate, but one that does a countdown or moves things around the screen would be a lot tougher

For WinXP here you go:

You have to actually hack some sort of windows kernal file or something to get it to work :(  That will probably cause problems if/when you do any windows updates...

For Mac users (pre-OS X), you can use Graphic Converter to save any picture in "StartupScreen" format. Choose save as, type "StartupScreen", and name the file "StartupScreen" without the quotes. Then just put the pic in your System folder. Next time you start up it will display instead of the smiling Mac logo.

You can get Graphic Converter here: http://www.lemkesoft.de/en/graphcon.htm

There are programs available to safely change it for you.
