Processor speed for Cruis'n World
« on: January 19, 2004, 07:29:40 pm »
I am building a driving MAME cabinet, I am almost done and want to run the game Cruis'n World and Cruis'n USA in MAME. Before I try and find a used cpu, does anyone know what the slowest processor speed to run these games would be. I thought I saw on site that it takes a very fast processor.Any help would be better than my uneducated guess. Thanks Matt

I remember people saying it ran fairly well on a 3 ghz cpu if they twealed some of the settings.

You may be better of emulating the n64 version. I've run that fine with an 800 ghz computer. :)

Could you tell me what emulator your using for the N64? My emulator is very old and only worked on about 3 of the N64 ROMS. Thanks a bunch as I will get a slower cpu and save my $$ for a 4 ghz when it hopefully someday comes out! Thanks Matt

I think the most compatible n64 emulator is Project64 right now, but 1964 is still being developed. I'd take a look at those two.
If you're not using windows, tho, I've got no idea :)

Not sure, let me run it through my 3.4 ghz machine (overclocked from 2.6) and I'll let you know how it does.  At some point I'm going to overclock this to 3.8 so I'll let you know then how it runs.  Many guys on the Vapochill forums have hit 4 ghz, but not too many use MAME.  Maybe I can talk one of them into loading it up to try out.  By the way, I built mine from a VapoChill PE system, easy to do and it runs the CPU at -30 degrees.  I'd say get one of these, but it's waaaaaaaaaaay overkill for a MAME cab.  I'm gonna throw a 2 ghz machine in my cab when it's finished (in like 4 months).

Well, my sound is still messed up on both games, but they seem to run OK at 3.4.  I'm still testing out my hardware at speeds above 3.2 so I can't give an accurate description beyond this right now.  My sound is on board which uses the CPU and I'm not sure if that is the problem with it.  It just cuts in and out.  Also the wheel doesn't self center, which makes turning a ---smurfette---!

The sound cutting is a lack of processor speed.  You can actually get a decent frame rate on a 2 gig processor (well by decent i meant 20 fps, which is playable) but you need a 4+ gig processor to have the insainely demanding midway sound chip running at full speed.
