Tempest Bartop
« on: September 30, 2016, 09:59:20 am »
I saw LeapinLew's awesome bartop Tempest and I decided to try and build one myself.  So credit to him for an awesome build, thread for his bartop here.

Also thanks to bvicarious who helped me find some of the old artwork he had helped with prior.

Here's a pic of the bartop towards the end of the build when I was working on the computer.  You can see the back is open and the computer is visible.

I made a build video, which leaves out a lot of wiring, all the computer setup, and other stuff I just either didn't get a good video of or wasn't interesting.  It's a bit long, but shows a lot of the process of the cabinet build.  Very brief show of my son playing some games at the end.

QUALITY work...

very well done and came together great. The video is fantastic and probably the best how-to I've seen to date.

While I don't have anywhere near as many tools as you, it's probably just as well as I bet I don't have your level of patience. I have a bad habit of taking twice as long to do something with the wrong tool and a lot of effort versus taking the 2 minute walk to the toolbox to get the right tool. :)

Although - a Kreg jig should be in my arsenal - especially after I saw how you used it.

Much appreciated Lew, thanks!

As for my patience, well, my lack of patience... it is just not documented in the final edit of the video.

Watching the kid play, I presume it's your son, the only slight (personal)modification I would make is swap out the 2 action buttons for leafs.

Not a bad idea - I've never used leaf switches in a project before, but listening to the buttons I'm starting to think you've got a good point.

Totally agree. The Tempest profile is perfect for a bartop.

I never really cared for Nintendo-shaped bartops. They curves fall at all the wrong places.

Nice work OP.

Wonderful build video!

One question though, was the t-molding not staying underneath?  I noticed the staples.

Looks like a TT2 from GGG with a Blue Inset knob.

You can see the Energy Storage Cylinder and modified Opti-Wiz interface board between 14:30 and 15:00 in the OP video.

Wonderful build video!

One question though, was the t-molding not staying underneath?  I noticed the staples.

Good eye there.  I screwed up and cut the slot badly on the bottom.  I didn't have it quite centered right, so I had to go back over it once I had it centered correctly and then the slot was too wide for the T-mold to stick on its own. I tried to put some 5 minute epoxy on the slot at first to get it to stick in there but that didn't do the trick.  So I got a bit ruthless and went at it with my staple gun. When its set on its bottom you can't see them.

I was planning on using rubber feet anyway to lift the cabinet off the table a tiny bit so the staples won't scratch the surface of anything.

Spinner - Yes it is a turbo twist 2. I got all the buttons on the projects from GGG.

Fantastic build, top notch! Loved the high speed video, wish more people would do that.

Any regrets you didn't make it an upright? When I got done with my bartop I thought, probably only 10% more work/materials to have made this an upright. I thought a bartop would take up less space but you still have to find a table or desk or somewhere to sit them. This looks lighter and more portable than mine though.

Anyway, great work!

Not really, because 1) I have several uprights and no room for more, and 2) I really liked the look of the one I copied.
