Been away from the boards a lot lately, had home leave. Back in Tanzania preparing to move to Kathmandu Nepal.
I'v been told that the mail is much more reliable and I'm looking forward to hiking near(not up) Everest.

I first found BYOAC during my first year in Africa. My dog just died, I had not yet found many friends here, and I was looking for something to occupy my time. Eventually I made more friends here and found my place in the DAR expat community. Now preparing to move once again to a place I don't know any one, its nice to know The BYOAC community will be coming where ever I end up.

That's true, we're a little troupe of pocket friends that you can take anywhere and talk with when you feel like it.  Not unlike my own actual little troupe of pocket friends which these quacks deny is even real, now they're treating me for...Can somebody! Please! Shut up that damn coyote? Clormatrazapam?

Nepal is on my bucket list, so is coming up with a better term than bucket list.  You rock Locke.  Have fun!

just finishing my first full day in Katmandu, Nepal. Saw an elephant down the street from my hotel, a woman spinning cotton into yarn on the corner, and picked up a unlock win 8.1 disk for 50 rupees (104 rupees Nepal = $1 USD) so less then 50 cense equivalent.

The whole city is surrounded by mountains. My wife and I are talking about doing the hike to everest base cape. It would be cool to say we hick everest.

Right now we are only about 1,000 Ft above sea level. They have hikes to everest that don't go up. Going up can set you back $60,000, takes months, and there is a good chance you might die.

Pfft, save the 60K and just go for broke.  That's how Tenzing Norgay do.  Should be fine.  Just bring a coat, I hear it's like mildly chilly up there.

That's something I'm going to look into. Not sure if the to Base camp is in the cards but to the base should be. I'll start researching after I find a home, a nanny, and a job.

Definitely. Not meaning to pry. I've known a few people that were expats. One worked for Nokia. Moved all over Europe and has lived in China the last 5 years. Definitely a different lifestyle.

About tools and stuff, you just sell everything and rebuy when you get there, or do you move it all? That's one big thing that's kept me from it. I like having a base camp

My wife works for a large International NGO that has a religious affiliation but strictly does not proselytize, even a little. My wife is not even a member of of the religion that the NGO is affiliated with. They also have a very strict non discriminations policy.

It depends on your organizations. Many employers will give you a shipment, ours was big enough for all our stuff. Fortunately all of our stuff is currently in storage back in Dar as it is unclear whether this process is going to be for a few years or a few months. If things work out then our stuff will be shipped here, if not then it will go off to where ever we end up.

You could, but that wouldn't be any fun. If you look at my out of Africa build, I made a frame, then traced it on poster board, then I added the curves I wanted added, and photos of what I wanted carved. I gave that stuff to a local wood carver and went over what I wanted in detail.

I've had my hands full the past week and a half. We found an apt, I've found a temporary job that might turn into a full time job (but it's very different from any other job I have ever had), and we found a good nanny to look after our son.

I don't yet have plans for a build here. Will need to settle a bit moe first. I did find that you can buy used CRT SCART tv's here so I'm planning to pick one up at some point as I missed my opportunity in TZ.
