Author Topic: Ms Pacman restoration part 2! (Read 8369 times)

So I brought the second ms Pacman in and plugged her up to see what she was doing. The answer is absolutely nothing. I can't get this thing to do anything, no meck glow, no game sound, and I can't find an electrical reading anywhere. Any ideas on where to start? Pics soon!

Pull the fuses and check them for continuity. Make sure they are making good contact. Once good, start working outward from there to check voltages. Grab the manual online and look at the pinout to see what voltages need to be at which pins.

Funny that you mention the manual, as I have two complete ones. One is still sealed on the back of this machine's back panel, and the other was loose on the bottom of it. I guess they just used the manual for the other machine and put it in here when they were done.

Better of replacing all of the fuses. They're cheap and you can have some test good but still not work. And clean all of the contacts on the fuse block with a scotch brite while you are at it.

That is not a bad idea. Is there a listing somewhere of what six fuses I need to get?

well you can test the board in your other MsPac just to see if its working. Beyond that you can pull out the door switch so the cab powers on with the back door off, then test voltages down the line. Start at the power supply, then go down to the fuses, etc until you find out where the power drops off. If you have nothing at the power supply, its likely the culprit

You can download the manual and double check. Personally I would replace the fuse blocks as well. The originals are pretty craptastic.

Ahh yes, forgot to mention the most overlooked no power causing issue there is... The interlock switch! Definitely check that. As for fuses and fuse blocks, changing the fuses is cheap enough, but more often than not the fuse block is the thing that should be replaced (whenever restoring a Ms Pac/Pac/Galaga). There can be a lot of issues caused by the old dirty blocks, such as hum (bars) in the video etc. I had a roll in the monitor from some kind of interference that went away when I replaced the block.

Well, I have ordered the Fuses, and maybe that is just all that is wrong with it. I am hoping so at least. As soon as those come in, I will try it out.

There is a interlock switch on the back door, Make sure that's pulled out in service mode.

I tried it pulled out and pressed in, but that did nothing. I haven't tried bypassing it though.

Oh, I also ordered some wire brushes to clean the fuse blocks with. Just to make sure that there isn't 34 years of grime keeping the fuses from making contact.

I would be skeptical that all your fuses are burnt, a voltmeter would tell the story. A scothbrite is not the answer. it will scratch the plating off the metal you should use a contact cleaner.

Well, I got her to turn on, but it seems to be having some trouble. It crashes every now and then giving me a bad rom error before it restarts. I wonder if I install that 6 pac kit if that will fix it?

Most likely you got a bad signal/ground to the board, Try wiggling the edge connector a bit see if it goes away.

It was bad rom connections. I tried putting my 6 pac in it, but this was the result. The leg connectors bent and one broke off after I checked to see if the chip was installed correctly.

so weird following this on KLOV and here, I'll suggets what the KLOVer did, try unbending the pin if it breaks solder it back on. I know you said your crummy soldering iron wasnt up to the task.......

Yup, I might just have to do that. There is a local electronics store near where I work, I can stop by there and get something better.

I also PMed the guy that sells the kits to ask if I could just buy that one half since it detaches from the other piece. Maybe I can just get a new one from him.

So while I am waiting for the replacement part to come in. Tonight I will be working on CPOs. I plan to use my new cheap heat gun to take off the old CPO, and put on a new one.

I finally got the kit back in after another guy on KLOV repaired it for me.

After installing everything, I was getting a garbled screen, and when I selected a game it would just go into a test screen. Then after discovering that one of the legs had bent down instead of going in, All I could do was get it to go to a Bad rom load screen. I think that this might be caused by the edge connector, as you can see that the power pinouts are damaged and I don't think that I am getting a good connection there. Any recommendations on how to fix that?

Turns out that I had two blown fuses. So I replaced them with the handy fuse kit that I had on-hand since I misdiagnosed the no power problem, and it works! Sort of.

Here is the board:

You can see I got the 6 pac kit installed and working. However the edge connector is pretty toasted.

I got it to load up to the right screen, but I had some issues with the joystick, as I couldn't go up or down, so pacman just died over and over again on the starting line.

Turns out the stick needed to be re-cleaned and reassembled. I did that, and fixed a loose wire on the leaf switch, and now when I try to load a game it goes to this screen:

When I get home tonight, I will try and see if the test switch is on, or if there is a short. Does any have a scan of the original wiring diagram handy?

Yup. It turned out to be just the test switch got bumped on. This game looks and plays great!
