I would use a joystick with a 2-way restrictor plate.

+1

What am I missing here. Tapper uses all 4 directions, right? What's the 2 way restrictor for?

The game uses a tapper control like this:

It's more or less a two way joystick although it has a little different feel to it. The cocktail cabinet used a regular two way joystick.

A little progress for today:

1. Took marquee and bezel artwork to FedexKinko's to print up. Should be ready Tuesday!
2. Added kickplate to make sure the veneer won't peel up in the front.
3. Took the A&W tap and spray painted it orange to try and give myself options for the 'tap" joystick.
      - I already have a black "Fanta" root beer tap
      - Orange might be a cool option.....who knows? Like I said, options.....
      - I have 5 more taps coming from eBay that I can experiment with as well.
4. Found a high quality A&W logo to print put on the orange tap.

More pics after I get the artwork from Kinkos!

The red ball top has all four directions. You're absolutely right. The second joystick will only be used for Tapper and is the tap. The "tap" joystick, the temporary black one on the right, only needs to "pull" towards you. There is no side to side needed for that. I have a Happ competition joystick in there right now with just the "down" microswitch spliced wired to the P1 Button 1 slot on my jamma harness.

I hope that made sense

So I've never actually played a tapper machines (rootbeer or budweiser) in the wild, but anytime I've played it on my machines, I use a 4 way joystick to go up and down between bars and right or left to run towards the empty glasses. What do you do with a 2 way joystick?

The two way joystick pours the beer/root beer. On a mame machine or Blue Elf game, you just use a button instead. The real Tapper machine doesn't have any buttons. Just a joystick to move the bartender and a tap joystick to pour the beer.

I've added the 6 buttons because I am running a 619-in-1 blue elf jamma pcb inside. I'm not limiting this to just Tapper.

You can pour with a button push, but if you've ever played Tapper in the wild, pouring with the tap feels so much better.

Tuesday Progress:

1. Picked up marquee and bezel from Fedex Kinko's and installed
2. Ripped apart a Happ Competition stick with a hacksaw and attached my Fanta Root Beer tap to the top
3. Bought a clear piece of plexi to sandwich bezel between that and smoked plexi

I like that I now have a "tap" joystick but I think it feels too skinny and wimpy. Also, I definitely need that restrictor plate as the tap wobbles all around from it being tall and skinny.

More taps in the mail from eBay. Going to take a look at redesigning the layout for the CP tomorrow as well to spread out the controls and reposition the joysticks as suggested.

Thoughts? I think the bezel and marquee turned out well. It's now that darn control panel and the "feel" of the tap

  • Less is More
This is nice!

I'm planning on building a (more or less) dedicated Tapper cab, do you know the original measurements for the control panel?
I have the scans of the side art and the front, but without accurate dimensions it's hard to get the sizing right.

Building ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- is fun!
Currently working on : Tron Desk, Kawasaki GPZ900R, Chevrolet S10 And Suzuki DR650

  • I play for the memories, not perfection
Tapper is one of my favorite MAME Games, as so I really like this Cab! I can totally see this sitting in the corner at a bar. As such I wonder why it didn't come with cup holders, you need some where to place your stein.
