Other system emulation
« on: June 09, 2015, 09:09:44 pm »
I have been playing with the new version of GroovyMAME (162), now that it has combined in the mainstream with MESS.

I managed to launch a Sega Genesis game, and have the resolution switch correctly. It looks amazing, better than I remember as a kid.

I am thinking of expanding my Arcade Cabinet from a MAME setup with 50 favourites, expanding to supporting Genesis (Megadrive where I come from), Super Nintendo, Amiga 500, Amiga CD32.

I think that I have Genesis and SNES covered, as they are well supported by MAME now, but the Amiga emulation seems less so.

Looking in to RocketLauncher and FS-UAE I think that I can get the emulation working well, however it will be missing the great features of Switchres...

So my question is:
Should I continue to explore Amiga Emulation with GroovyMAME, or should I try and figure out how I can get FS-UAE to SwitchRes?

Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

Keep in mind that while MESS had emulation for gobs and gobs of machines, it wasn't in playable condition for many of them, and some were in a less than desirable state of emulation.   So it is very possible, I haven't checked, that Amiga was one of those that was in less than complete status.

Amiga in MAME isn't too great yet, a bit hit and miss. And to be perfectly frank it's not much fun if you go without a keyboard.

I have a CRT TV next to my MAME cabinet.
Would it be possible to have dual monitor output?
MAME games on cabinet and emulators on second output which would go to the TV via VGA to SCART cable.

That would be really awesome!

Thinking that the CD32 should be fine without a keyboard, as almost all of the games were created for the console and did NOT need a keyboard.

I am finding that while Hyperspin (and MAME cabinets in general) look fantastic with tons of games, when it comes time to actually using the cabinet it is better to just have a smaller list of the BEST games that you want to play. Too much choice is sometimes a bad thing!

I know that this approach is not for everyone, but I would be happy to have Amiga-500 emulation with only 50 games (not requiring keyboard), than to have the whole set of somewhat unusable games.

Unfortunately "Silkworm" is an example of a game that was awesome on the Amiga, and was better with 1-Player on Joystick (Heli) and the other player on the Keyboard (Jeep).

I never owned a Genesis, SNES or CD32 as a kid... but my friends had them.

MAME List = 50 games that I loved playing at the Arcade (all tested and working correctly)
Amiga 500 List = 50 games that I loved playing on MY Amiga at home (all tested and working correctly)
Genesis List = all games, this is more for when visitors come and want to play something they loved.
SNES List = all games, this is more for when visitors come and want to play something they loved.
CD32 List = all games, this is more for when visitors come and want to play something they loved.
