crt emu driver with ati radeon hd 4670
« on: May 20, 2015, 04:40:18 pm »
Hello!

I tried to install an ultimate radeon hd 4670 graphics card with my mame cab. The brand of the card is Sapphiere with 512 mb. My system is windows xp professional 32-bit and I used the correct crt emu driver 9.3.

I could install the emu driver without no problem - there was the message .. did not pass the windows test .. and I continued the installation and afterwards it said that I have to restart the system again. I used to have an ati radeon x550 before and the installation procedure was the same but I noticed that there is a difference to the ati hd 4670 - the message "did not pass the .." showed up TWICE when installing the ati radeon x550 which works correctly. The reason why I want to install the ati hd 4670 is because it is a faster graphics card.

After restarting the computer I saw that there was no switchres galaga symbol on the corner of the screen and the pc was trying to install some new hardware. I opened the device manager and found out that the ati hd 4670 was present under graphics card but different from the ati radeon x550 there was no secondary device.

For some reason the ati radeon hd 4670 is only installed as a "primary device" but the secondary display does not install (thats why I could only click one time in the crt emu driver emulation as mentioned above). Does anyone know why installation does not work with this graphics card? Has it got something to do that some specific models of the hd 4670 simply cannot output 15khz (switchres option) on the secondary port or is there some software issue / trick that will allow switchres driver to be installed?

regards,

Calamity

From your description it is actually working. Only older cards show up as two separate devices. Ignore the missing galaga icon, I should have removed it from the other driver too. Just launch Arcade OSD and pick a 15 kHz mode for the desktop. You can enable the secondary device too from the display properties dialog.

Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Hello Calamity!

Thanks for the fast answer. I forgot to mention that when I start groovymame - there is the message "could not load driver" - actually I did not try if out if the games do work. By the way what connector will output the 15khz with this graphics card? When you look at the pc from the backside there is the dvi port first (on the left) and the vga port is on the right. On the ati radeon x550 it is just the other way round.

regards,
Alex

Both connectors will output 15 khz, but you'd better use the dvi-i one with an adapter to avoid detection issues.

Hello Calamity!

I am trying to keep it short so that there will be no extra confusion. I am not quite sure about some details. First of all I am going to install the crt emu driver for the radeon hd 4670. By the way I think I know why the OS wants to install new hardware after the installation of the emu driver. It has got nothing to do with the vga nor the dvi port but with the hdmi port. Since emu driver is not the original driver it is looking for audio driver which is passed through the hdmi port and it needs the whole "package" driver which includes audio as well.

There is one thing I am not quite sure of. First I install the crt emu driver - I am getting no picture with my onboard vga graphics port so I am using the vga or dvi port of the graphics card. At this time I am using a 31khz mode for the LCD monitor. Then I use arcade osd and pick a 15khz mode for the desktop or enable the secondary device from the display properties dialog. The problem is as soon as I activate the 15khz mode - will it be immidiately or later when the computer is restarted? This is essential because when the lcd is still connected to the graphics card connector and it outputs 15khz suddenly the lcd screen could be damaged of course.

With the ati radeon x550 the above procedure was no problem at all because the lcd was connected to the dvi port of the graphics card and even after restarting the computer the 31khz mode was still on the dvi port and the 15khz mode was seperate on the vga port. Hope you understand what my point is.

So is it only possible to do this installation safely when the activation of the 15khz mode (for both ports as you said) is done via the SEPERATE onboard graphics port of the pc? If the activation of the 15khz mode is only turned on AFTER rebooting the pc there would be no problem - I would disconnect the lcd before and connect my sony pvm to the dvi port and everything is ok.

And a last thing - it is better if I use the dvi port with vga adapter?  I am using a vga cable with rgb bnc connectors which go into a Sony PVM 2053md. Is this correct?

Regards,
Alex

Hi stiegi,

I think you're creating a complicated problem out of something that is very simple. The installation process is the same one that what you did for the x550. If you want the frequency change to happen right after rebooting what you have to do is to set your desktop to 640x480 already before installing the driver. This way once you restart the system the new 640x480 interlaced mode will get active, because this modeline is always defined as 15 kHz by default to make this possible. Anyway your LCD won't break if you feed it with 15 kHz, it will just display an out of sync message.

As for the HD audio driver, you definitely need to install it if it's not installed already. You DO NOT need the whole video card driver package for that. Just grab the proper audio package from Realtek (probably).
