Classic cars
« on: May 19, 2015, 03:56:55 am »
Anyone into this? I can appreciate a nice car, but I think that they are a little ridiculous. My neighbor has a 1956 ford pickup truck that so far has probably cost him the same as his house.

Anyways I recently picked up a classic car for my wife. She is hardcore into it, in theory anyways. Has had no actual hands on experience and pretty much beats the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- out of her car and wonders why it isn't running as well as when she bought it. I have a fear that this car will be the start of many crazy ideas she starts and needs me to finish. Luckily I got it for a steal, and won't be much of a loss if it comes to that... except that I sold one of my Gibson Blueshawks (guitar) to pay for it  :'(

It's a relatively new classic, if you go by car over 25 years... it's a 1983 Buick Hearse, the model starts with a C but can't remember off the top of my head. The advertisement said Buick Elektra but it was actually a Buick modded by a company called Eureka in a fancy script font that probably confused them. It's got a 307 engine, runs very well (stalled once but hadn't been driven in several months, needed some fluids topped up) and had relatively new tires on it. I imagine it was a working car, as it only has 128,000 km on it. It has the original roller bed, but in the back it's got another row of seats installed and the back doors have inside handles so those people can get out. I'm hoping to make a little extra money by driving little goth girls to prom or graduation and of course halloween is coming up.

You have to understand... if my wife was a little slimmer and taller with bigger knockers and black hair she would be Elvira. She was really excited. It's got flames on the front.

That looks like fun. You have a real Munsters vibe going with that car.

This made me laugh-

Yeah she's a wild one. But in the good way. I'm half really excited about this car and half dreading it will turn into one more chore for me to do around the house. We have a large property and I have a lot of responsibilities as is. I'd be happy to help her with soem stuff, but car stuff, apart from changing belts and oil, doesn't interest me in the slightest.

But if he does that then it'll get lost amongst all the other hearses with flames on the front.  (Seriously Reno is weird.  ;)  )

Nah I think it's better to not travel any sort of long distance in this thing till it gets and overhaul. Also... Reno.  No.

Nope, it is a Buick Electra.  An "Electra Park Avenue" to be exact.

My dad had one when I was a kid, in dark dark blue.  Was hot as all bloody hell in the summer time.  BIG inside, but too damned hot to make you want to get in and go for a drive if the sun was out.

Currently messing around with a 1980 Plymouth Arrow pickup.  My dad bought it brand new in November of '79.

Engine & transmission rebuilt, new gas tank, new suspension all way around, new exhaust from the engine to tailpipe, replaced the stock POS Mikuni carb with an electric choke Weber.

Had it running great, passed emissions with plenty of margin.  Picked up 1400 pounds of laminate flooring from Lowes in it, no problem.

Damn flexplate cracked on me (it's an automatic) and I can't start it anymore.  Can't find a replacement, so the truck has been sitting idle since last year.

Interesting. That definitely fits how the front looks! It says Centurion on the side and nowhere does is say Electra.

That sucks, I hope you find parts...

Yeah I hope so too.  Have some nostalgia for that truck.  First thing I ever drove.  We went camping / hunting in it.

So today I picked up the original roller bed. It had been taken out because the back as I had previously mentioned I think has been modified with more seating. It's basically a sheet of 5/4 veneered plywood that fills from the back of the front seat to the rear door. It has rollers on it to make swapping caskets in and out easy. I'm thinking of just chopping off the rear third to fit behind the back seats and stripping the hardware from the rest and trashing it. It's probably about 300 pounds, 4 1/2 feet wide and 10 feet long. I have nowhere to store that, and really no need for it. But the rollers could actually come in handy if ever I was a gigging musician again.
