Looks cool, But the button config won't work on my cab. Unless the gamepad support and keys work separately, Because I use joy to key.

Re: Pac A Pong - RESPONSE FROM THE DEV!

I reached out the developer regarding the configurable controls.  This is way better than the reply I recieved from the people redoing Gauntlet.  Here is his reply:

Hi Eric,

I actually had someone else contact me about this, he wanted to put the game in his cabinet. I figured it was less work to make a build with custom controls for him instead of making the controls customizable with a config file or something. So that's what I did. But, if there's more of you guys out there, then that's definitely something I can do. Let me see what I can do, but I think I can have the controls read from an external .ini file. That'd do it right?

Thanks for reaching out,

Dick Poelen

I saw your post on imgur and took the liberty of sharing it with my fellow arcade enthusiast.

You may or may not know that there is a significant base of people that play games on PCs with real arcade controls.  Joysticks, buttons, the whole works.  Some even have built arcade cabinets.  But I digress.

One of the replies was a lack of configurable controls.

I would enjoy sharing the news should you add that feature.  Thanks for your consideration.

Generic Eric

Any additional input?

The reddits say that the Dev will be on https://twitter.com/BetaWaveRadio tomorrow doing a podcast from 6-8 GMT+1.  Streaming via twitch.

Between all of the imgur, itch.io, podcast, reddit, twitching, twitters this has to be the social blitz meets royal flush.

The only thing missing is myspace.

I like to reach out to indie devs when I can in the hopes that one will fold in and make cool games playable on real arcade controls.  Because, frankly, I'm tired of xbox360 controllers.  I just want to bump, jump, run, and maybe the random backflip or stray hadouken.  Just less than 6 buttons.

I heard that. I get a lot of games from gamejolt.com and get disappointed when I have to exclude a good game due to lack of configurable controls.

Well.  Reddit might be full of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.  I couldn't find the stream on twitch referenced by the twitter page of the podcast.  Gz that sounded convoluted.  Anyway, I played that game and it was fun.  Its like a video game mash up with crazy base.

Give the game a shot.  If you like it, post here, but definitely email the DEV.

Seemed very fun. I love that it is multi platform! :cheers: I briefly tried it out. Here are my thoughts:

Some simple directions would be helpful.
It's only a 2 player game and I have no friends. :banghead:

i dont think button configuration its a problem, anyone in the BYOAC hobby can easy change buttons layout with xpadder,or autohotket, Heres a cab coin friendly version i found on the net, just run the run.exe and press 5 to start playing. 5 as mame default coin. button config can be modify in the autohotkeys provided.

Xpadder and autohotkey are windows only. Pac a Pong is multi platform. Your solution would leave Mac and Linux users stranded. Ability to change input is important.

so ,does this comment means, that the other 2 mayor types of OS (operative systems) lack tools such as autohotkey and xpadder? if so, im glad i dont use them too often....

Obviously the authors target audience was not just windows users if he made it multi platform.

It's not that hard to make a configuration file to declare inputs.

Back on topic, This AM I found a reply from the DEV.

Hi,

all of you asked for custom controls so here's a build that enables that. I want to test it with you guys first before I add it to the "regular" build that's on itch.io.

It's done true an .ini file, and it may not be the most user friendly way to do it, but your smart people, you'll figure it out :)

http;//www.kingpenguin.nl/pacapong_arcade_windows.zip
http;//www.kingpenguin.nl/pacapong_arcade_linux.zip

in the ini files you can change the key, you have to do this in ASCII code. Use the DEC value, and for letter, use the capitals. Here's a site with all the codes: http://www.ascii-code.com/

For example,the left player right now looks like:

[player_left]
left="65.000000"
down="83.000000"
right="68.000000"
up="87.000000"
start="49.000000"

which means it's controlled by WASD + 1 for start

if you want IJKL it would be

[player_left]
left="74.000000"
down="75.000000"
right="76.000000"
up="73.000000"

the .ini file are located here (might be some hidden folders):

Windows: /Users/<User Name>/AppData/Local/pacapong
Linux: Home/.config/pacapong

Hope this works for you, if not just let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Regards,

Dick Poelen

PS: I changed the keyboard on the startscreen to wiggling joysticks!

Check it out.  I'm away but I'll look at it later.

most distro's have joy2key or some other gamepad to keyboard mapper available in the repositories.
I havn't used it much though because most stuff I use just works with a gamepad or has it's own built in mapping.

And as long as the game is running under X you could use xmodmap to map the keyboard back and forth when starting and exiting the program. This would change the mapping for all the programs running, so if it isn't running full screen, it might cause confusion.
