And no, I'm not LARPing...
« on: February 01, 2015, 11:08:35 am »
So I bought a few wall hanger swords based on the lord of the rings 'hero' swords: sting, gandalf's sword, orcrist, anduril and aragorn's ranger sword.  Overall I like the look and feel of the swords themselves but don't really the wall plates--so naturally I want to make new ones.

Does anyone have an idea how to do the "burnt" wood effect around the outside edges?  Orcrist plate is attached for reference...

and the swords for reference...

Butane torch.

Get one at the hardware store, or at the professional chef store.

Keep a fire extinguisher handy.

Use a thinned out black stain and let dry prior to the regular stain...perhaps tape it off first as well.

Toy swords on the wall = ok

Putting on costume and waving toy sword around in public parks = too nerdy

Got it.

I wouldn't swing any decorative sword around for any reason. The tang (is that the right part?) might be far too short and will probably break or slip out at the wrong moment. Google for the QVC moron that broke one into his shoulder.

Yeah--I've opened the sting sword up and the tang is a thin 1/4" piece of metal spot welded to the much heavier stainless steel sword part--One good crack and that weld would break.  They are definitely wall hangers.

Although I have to admit gandalf's sword and aragorn's ranger sword feel utterly awesome in your hands--very heavy and well balanced...

Spot welded? That's bonkers. Do they at least come with a warning not to try and cut paper with it at least?

Wait.... Are they even sharpened at all? I heard most wall hangers are never sharpened.

The one's for LARPing should never be sharpened either i'd think.

I had to look up LARPing.
They did that in the movie Role Models.

Unless someone is storming your castle, probably safest to keep them in their sheaths.   Has anyone else seen these for sale at Truck stops?

I live in Southwest Florida and I can't say that I've noticed a great deal of LARPing here.  We do however have a whole lot of "Check this out, hold my beer." incidents.

Decorative swords have their place, they can look cool hanging on a wall for swinging in the air, I have seen some that are sharpened and since they are almost all stainless steel they will hold the edge fairly well.

I wouldn't swing any decorative sword around for any reason. The tang (is that the right part?) might be far too short and will probably break or slip out at the wrong moment. Google for the QVC moron that broke one into his shoulder.

Yes it is the tang that you are referring to, its size and how it is attached makes a huge difference, along with the type of steel used and the tempering process.  Not surprisingly hand held weapons are an interest of mine.

As for the LARPing...see the attached.  I still play regular games of D&D but I could never get into the LARPing.  I guess the closest I have gotten was themed paintball outings.

In the chart I have to admit I fall down most of those branches to one depth or another.
