Cheap bartop design.
« on: January 20, 2015, 06:58:01 am »
This is going to be the build log for my as yet Untitled bartop. I wanted it to be cheap and easy just like me. So i designed it to be mostly cut from one 4' x 2' x 1/2" MDF sheet. as it what i have cheap in my area.
So i designed this bartop with no hard cuts in it. all the cuts are straight cuts. I also took a page from Vigo when I was planning out the layout of the Sheet cuts. Which im still working on so may have a layout posted soon. Included in this post is a pic from Sketchup. if anyone wants the file i can provide it as im new to sketch up the model is simple as well. the Square with the Circle inside it is the Joystick. the Square was only so i knew how much space i had under the CP when deciding the layout of the CP. The button Circles are the size the button will be above the CP not the hole cut. ea Hole will only be the standard size 1 1/8". Im still unsure how im going to do the Speaker panel not sure if i should leave it angled off the Monitor bezel or parallel with the top. the final dimensions will be around 22"H x 21"W x 15"D. for the first part im only cutting out the sides, Control Panel, bottom, Top, Speaker Area. For a bezel ill mostly get cheap black foam board from walmart as a temporary solution. also not showing is the supports that not use for attaching the wood panels. I'm gonna use either left over MDF from the build or just but a 1"x2" stake and cut it to the lenths I need.

Have you tested that layout with two people?

21" for a 2 player, 67 button config is really tight.

I don't think you're going to have enough clearance with the buttons on the right side, on P2.

Not yet im not fully set in on the 4th button there i added it last min just to see how the room looked. The control panel im coming from is 24" fig it might be a lil tight to lose 4 inches. im gonna of course do the normal cardboard test before i set the CP in stone. My main thing is to have two player six buttons. one of the main reasons i went with the tight grouping from slagcoin.

the Circles I have are the size of the top of the button so the body of them is actually smaller in dia. it will be close but should just fit. Im concerned about not having enough wood on the CP P2 side after drilling the holes out. think there will be like 1/8 inch or so after drilling the hole.

I'd be concerned about clearance UNDERNEATH the panel, unless you're using Sanwa or Goldleft buttons. And if you're batons to hold down your CP,  you won't have any room at all. Some stuff to consider.

you know i thought i had measured the buttons with the micro switchs but i might not have my last stick used 3/4" so going to 1/2" ill need to remeasure good call on that.

Ohh, use dowels.

not a bad idea. Most two player bartops i see are only 18" wide with Two play so i fig 21" would be enough.

did some reworking of the layout.  the only plans i had with me when i got the wood cut was the side profile and the measurements for the other pieces needed. So far i have the sides, CP, bottom and top together. now that i have the CP layout set ill be able to move on to the monitor placement. for now using a 19" widescreen till i can get a 20" 4:3. since i have no room left on the CP im thinking of puttin the Coin and player start on the front. might just do player 1 start coin and player 2 start. we see how it goes. might even skip the coin button as im going through the list and putting the games on free play if i can. probably end up doing a combo for coin and put admin buttons on the front. with start buttons. pics to come later

Take a look at my Green Bay Bartop - it's VERY similar in dimensions to your plan.  I think you have enough space for 7 buttons, but it will be tight.
