Which Frontend to use?
« on: November 30, 2014, 10:12:15 pm »
Hello, I got a question, I got a friend that has an older PC with a Pentium 4 in it with WinXP. He fell in love with my arcade I did, I used HyperSpin in mine, I told him I could toss in some other emulator in there for console games since he will just be sitting in a chair with a controller, however I tried setting up GameEX on his older PC, and it seems like it might be too much of resource hog, is there a frontend that is not too taxing on an older PC like this? Which frontend has the lowest overhead? Thank you for any input it is greatly appreciated.

You could test MALA. It's very easy to use. Question here.
Greetings.

I'd try AttractMode or retrofe.

If he will be sitting in a chair using a controller, I'd just buy a raspberry pi and install emulation station.

I've installed Mala on a 600mhz Pentium 3.  Works fine.

If he/you like hyperspin you should be able to use that if you want. I use it on little netbook with an atom processor and have no problems. I did turn off transitions and tried to stream-line it as much as possible.

Forgot to mention, that I have heard that using the MP4 game play videos instead of the FLV ones uses less CPU. Not, sure how big of a hit the difference is, but if you are limited in machine power, you might want to use the MP4 videos (assuming you are using them).

I like to use MALA.  It's low impact and amazingly simple to set up.  If you want to got animation crazy with all the bells and whistles, HyperSpin is your game.

MAMEWAH probably uses even less RAM and CPU power.
