Inches - Confused!

Hi All,

I have been looking at some plans for a new project over on Jakobud, and I have noticed that the plans are in inches.

That's all good, but I don't get the format of the numbering.

I'm used to dealing with 1/4, 1/2, 3/8 etc.

So, these are my questions.

Is 6.25 equivalent to 6 1/4", and if so, how the hell do you work out 8.625 or even 16.9375?

Is there a converter for this!!

If someone could explain it to me it would be much appreciated, as then I need to convert down to 3/4 size - or 75% ...

UFO is based out of the UK. They don't use inches there. You also order a Royale with Cheese instead of Quarter Pounder there.

Where he's based is irrelevant.  As long as he's based within our universal framework, math is still math.  Converting decimals to fractions and vice versa is, like I said, elementary level math. 

Totally confused by the post to be honest because he ends the post with a fraction, then converts to a percentage...  which is nothing more than a decimal.

1. Use LT's chart to convert the fractional part of the measurement to the decimal equivalent.

2. Add that to the non-fractional number of inches -- (feet * 12"/foot) + inches + decimal equivalent of the fraction.

3. Plug that value into any one of the many online converters like this one and press enter. (google "convert inches to mm" if you don't like that converter, but it is good for converting both ways)

Example: Convert 2' 3-9/16" to mm
  Step 1.  9/16" = 0.5625"
  Step 2.  (2 feet * 12"/foot) + 3" + 0.5625" = 24" + 3" + 0.5625" = 27.5625 inches
  Step 3.  Type "27.5625" into the inches box and press enter ==> 700.0875 mm

it's easy you just need the inch conversion amount,  2.54 cm to an inch or 254mm.  Convert all 1/2 etc to decimal .5 then multiply.
