Does length or diameter of a resistor matter?
« on: November 28, 2014, 02:34:16 pm »
So I'm fixing this

20141126_175121 by harveybirdman1, on Flickr

And I know orange, orange, brown, gold = 330 Ohms with 5% tolerance

But I go to Radio shack to buy the resistor and all the ones they have seem to be longer and have a smaller diameter.  Does this matter? or if I have the right Ohms and the right tolerance am I good?

Yep, you got it.  The larger the resistor is, the more power it can take before blowing up.  The very act of resisting current generates heat.  That whole Conservation of Energy thing.  :)  So the larger a resistor, the more thermal mass to radiate and the more power it can take.

You guys got it.

The other things that can cause one type of resistor to be a different size than another one with similar resistance/wattage values is the composition of the resistive element (carbon composition, carbon film, metal film, wire wound, etc.) and/or the molded/conformal coated case.

So you bought it just in case and repaired the board already, right?

Yes I repaired board (albeit the worst hack job ever) amazingly enough connectivity was achieved. Still no love though, the security chip is toast. Going to buy a new board eventually.  Monitor needs a cap kit badly too. Power is sound now though wired in a new supply I'll update my project thread Sunday.
