Space Invaders Help Needed (electrical related)
« on: October 10, 2014, 04:05:53 am »
I've had this original Space Invaders for some time now and every year it get worse electrically. I had the boards redone and added a multi-game kit, but the original monitor has seen better days. It started off with some streaking and after several years, there is no picture. I think the best solution is to install a more modern CRT monitor that I have sitting on the shelf. I found a mod on a Space Invaders site that give instructions, but I am currently unable to try it out because I think the original power supply crapped out too. I saw that a site called cambridgearcade has an adapter to install a modern PS from a computer, but I am not sure if this guy is still in business. I e-mailed three times since June and no reply. Either way, is there anyone out there willing to help me out to come up with something similar to what that site (used) to offer? I don't mind doing the actual work. I just don't have the smarts to figure it out. From what I read is the Space Invaders cabs were not like other cabinets in regard to the power supplied.

My alternative solution is to remove the original boardset (which I have a lot invested in) and replace with a 60-in-1 with only Space Invaders set to play and put a JAMMA harness in. I really don't want to go that route because I love the idea of using the original programming, not to mention I spent money on the multi-game kit and never even got to use it. The cabinet is in awesome condition for its age. I am sure that is due to the marine-grade plywood that was used in the construction of it. Help a arcade brother out. Thanks!

Seems like it'd be easier and cheaper just to recap the power supply.  Is that a possibility?

An lcd will "work" but it looks like crap. The problem with SI is the tube is separate from the chassis. To fit in a vision pro or other type of common arcade crt the cabinet will need to be altered a little to accommodate the frame. I got lucky with my SI and the monitor I had on hand that dropped right in (see SI pic in sig for story). Cambridge not responding to emails is nothing new. Maybe these guys will respond http://www.elektronforge.com to you. The linear ps can be fixed, but how long will that fix last til the next pops up. A modern switcher and a new crt can get that thing running solid and pain free for years.

good day.

I definitely don't want to put a LCD in. I want everything to look original, but make it more reliable. I already have another color CRT to try the conversion on. I just need to get a good power supply for everything. I'll try elektronforge. They were the ones who redid my boards long ago.

Switching power supply to space invaders harness.  Worked for me.
