Robi Robot and His upcoming Mini Arcade Cabinet
« on: October 14, 2014, 07:10:04 pm »
Hey there guys, long time no see!  Been pretty busy with school and whatnot.  My younger son and I have been building a part work Robot.  The original was sent to the international space station for zero g testing.  I think that that robot's name was Kirobo.  This one is called Robi or Robby if you will.  Pretty expensive if you consider that each magazine is about 15-18 bucks but priceless if you consider the time spent with my son and getting him excited about robotics.

Daiki, my son, also said that he wanted a mini arcade cabinet for Robby so we are taking my quad core HTC cellphone and using it for the brains for the arcade cabinet.  More pics of that after we finish the robot, but I think I will be using MAME4droid (0.139u1) and hacking a wii controller and blutoothing it to my phone.  Gonna be a loooonnnng haul but stay tuned.

By the way, the robot understands and responds to over 350 phrases and recognizes about 1000 words (so the manual says, but we shall see.

This little guy has over 20 mini futaba servos, can walk, balance on one leg, turn your TV on and change channels for you.  Pretty cool.

A little more progress on Robi.  These magazines come once a week but my youngest son and I were late starting so we were able to get quite a few issues from yahoo auction site here in Japan.  We just finished 41 of 70 and are still a little behind on his trike (only 10 of those are assembled).  My youngest is 12 years old and has a little problem with attention span so he doesn't read each and every step in the instruction manual like he should.  We ended up having to disassemble quite a bit of the robot so that we could go back and program IDs for each of the 15 servo motors that have already been assembled.  Got him on track and he spent most of last Saturday doing that (It was raining cats and dogs here so there was nothing else for him to do)  It is looking good so I thought I would share pics with you guys.

We will be using my HTC Butterfly as the guts for Robi's Mini MAME4Droid arcade cabinet.  It has a pretty powerful quad core processor and a 64 gig microSD card.  I will be hacking an extra Wii controller we have around the house for controls.  My contract for this phone ended last week and I am getting a new phone, so...

I also purchased a MakerBot Replicator 2 recently that we will be using to fabricate the cabinet parts.

Hope you enjoy our progress so far.  Stay tuned for more pics.
