MAME issue, cannot map player 1/player 2 start button
« on: October 14, 2014, 08:00:37 am »
Hello!  After many years of lurking, I decided to join the forums after almost giving up on a MAME issue that is kicking my butt.

I have built two MAME cabinets in the past, all using Hyperspin, and have had very little issues. I decided to build another cabinet for a friend, and have never had so much trouble fixing one small thing, mapping the player 1 and 2 start buttons.

I'm using the Xin Mo USB controller (if that matters), as I've used on my other builds.  I go into the general inputs, and map the player start buttons as joystick button 0, and joystick button 1.   However, they do not work at all.  If I go into the game specific inputs, it shows that the start buttons are mapped as keyboard 1, and 2.  Isn't the general inputs supposed to override the game specific settings?

As a test, I loaded up Frogger, went to game specific inputs, and changed the mapping to my joystick button 0, and 1, and that works fine.  BUT, I can't do that for all 500 or so games.  I've also tried deleting the default.cfg file, but that did not work.   Any ideas?

Start Buttons are not Joy 0 or Joy 1, its labeled as Start 1, Start 2 etc...and for coin insert are Coin 1 Coin 2 etc...

This should be defaults for Coins  5, 6 etc.. Starts are 1, 2 etc...

Right, the Start 1 and 2 is defaulted to keyboard 1 and 2.  My start buttons on my MAME controls come up as joy button 0 and 1.  My issue is that when I map them as a general input, it does not change them in the game specific inputs, thus they do not work.

EDIT:  As a side note, I tried this in my MAME setup on my work computer, which is version 0.139.  No matter what you remap the start buttons to, they stay as keyboard 1 and 2.

Not sure.  I had a friend of mine try it on his MAME setup, and his does the same thing.  Very weird.

maybe you're remapping the wrong things

the ones you want to remap are in
Inputs (General)
 -> Other Controls

1 Player Start
2 Player Start

if you remap the ones in
Inputs (General)
 -> Player 1 Controls
 P1 Start

it WILL NOT work, because that's for start buttons on Mahjong panels and such devices.
