Rad Kade Frontend Preview
« on: August 22, 2014, 05:16:52 am »
    Rad Kade 1.0a
    brought to you by: http://www.radkade.com/

    Introduction

So, you might be asking yourself what is Rad Kade.  Essentially Rad Kade is an arcade frontend that is built too look and operate like an authentic retro-style frontend.  Unlike many most frontends that appear to have the visual styling of modern media centers Rad Kade was built with gaming in mind.  Rad Kade won't tell you what the weather is like outside, it won't play your movies with an elaborately built player, but it will do one thing, and do it well; it will allow you to find, locate, rediscover and enjoy all your favorite games in an environment that is truly sculpted for an arcade machine.

    Overall Features

    • Authentic retro look/feel
    • Customization of databases and lists
    • Full search feature (to locate games across all systems)
    • On the fly filtering (done by the frontend)
    • System merging capabilites
    • JSON API / HTTP protocols built in
    • Infinite sub-menus (to organize your games your way)
    • Much much more.
    • LED Blinky Support
    • Dual Monitor Support (for displaying marquees in secondary monitor)
    Databases & Game Lists

Rad Kade is capable of many different things of which you find in some other frontends, and some you will not.  Rad Kade is compatible with any other frontends databases (XML, Line Separated Text, JSON and MySql) or you can build your own lists from within the frontend itself or using the control panel application Rad Wizard.  With Rad Kade you have the option to load your databases into internal memory upon starting the frontend or loading them live with the selection of each system (loading into memory takes an additional sum of time to load the frontend 73 systems on Duo Core ~ 8 seconds, but will provide better overall stability and speed once completed.)

    Internal Media

Rad Kade is capable of using any image file format to display artwork (PNG, BMP, JPG, GIF, JPEG, SVG) and is compatible with several types of video (AVI, MP4, MKV.)  Rad Kade also has a built in scraper that will allow you to download and switch out artwork on the fly from several popular gaming websites as well as http://www.radkade.com/.  Video scraping is also accessible for those who want to browse through our stock of commercials, and videos of actual gameplay via other websites.  All of our media is obtained by third party websites via use of authorized API functions, so your media is never too far out of hand.

    Parental Controls

Rad Kade has a sophisticated built in parental control panel that will allow users to closely monitor and control which games and the length in which games can be played (per hour, day, week or month.)  Rad Kade uses a credit system whereas 1 (one) credit is equal to a defined amount of playtime.  Once a user runs out of credits they will not be reissued more credits until the next time defined by the administrator or via administration override.  Our parental controls also have the ability to hide all games over a predefined rating (as set forth by the system administrator) to keep would be players from viewing the content.  The ratings systems are compatible with all known video game rating systems and may even be used by the system administrator.

    Web Interfacing

Rad Kade has been built with a suite of web controls that allows users to connect directly to their machine, view game lists, view history reports, stop a game in progress, start a new game or even shutdown/restart their PC.  Rad Kade is also developed with a full JSON API built into the application itself that allows third party developers or system administrators to write their own applications to interface with the arcade frontend.

    Search Functions

Rad Kade has a built in search function which allows users to search for games using a set of keywords or specific name matching.  For instance if you search for 'Fighting' a list will be returned to you containing every categorized fighting games from all systems that Rad Kade indexes.  On the same hand if you search for let's say "Mario" a list will be returned to you with every game containing the word "Mario" within it's description or title.  You can also search by using genres, categories, manufacturers, year spans and more.

    Full Attraction Mode

Rad Kade features a full attraction mode that automatically jumps into a random system (lists can be customized by system administrator) and starts a game allowing it to run for a predefined amount of time (set forth by the system administrator) before automatically closing the game and starting a new one.  Users can define what systems to include in their attract mode and what games (if any) to exclude from being chosen by the attraction mode.  Users can also choose to opt out of the attraction mode feature via the administration control panel (Rad Wizard.)  The attraction mode also has the capabilities to play prerecorded games for MAME using (IPN) files, so you can show off your gaming skills even when your away from your machine!

    List Filtering

With Rad Kade 1.0a you can create a new menu item without the need of a separate database.  To achieve this when creating a new system or sub-menu node simple assign the parent system and set the conditional parameters and variables to define how to filter list.  To make things easier for you in creating lists Rad Kade comes complete with a full featured list generation unit within the Rad Wizard itself.  Rad Kade also has the capabilities of an infinite amount of sub-menus (nodes) which means users can create a chain of sub-menus that will help to keep their frontend organized in a very easy and familiar fashion.[/list]

    That looks quite cool.

To be honest though, after having invested so much effort in setting up HyperSpin, I have no plans digging into another FE anytime soon.

I applaud your addition of a search and live list filtering, those are really great features that HyperSpin (and other FEs as well) are missing!

At the risk of sounding ... old... why do "retro" things look so completely and totally not like how things were during the time they're trying to be "retro" to?  It makes "authentic retro style" a bit of an oxymoron.

Don't get me wrong -- I think this is very cool. Not my cup of tea, but a perfect implementation of the kind of retro that things like "nyan cat" were trying to be. If that's what people like, this is a home run!  Being really authentic is tough when your emulators are spanning 30 years.

And it looks better than Mala.  >:D

    Hey Everyone,

Thanks for the feedback so far  The head developer and I are also looking for comments on features that users would like to see in this FE or features you really like about other Frontends. Although, you cannot use Hyperspin themes any box art, cart art, wheel art, can be used.

Very cool looking - though I will say the "boxes" in the NES portion looked a little fat.

The boxes were out of proportion in the video (good eye) I forgot to set the frontends resolution settings up prior to recording.  This effect is not present if you set your options up properly.

    Hey Everyone,

In the next day or so I'll posting a little more thorough video of how to setup Rad Kade and a more detailed walk through of the features currently in the Fe. The Head developer and I will also include a link to download Rad Kade via Github for everyone to test out. Also, as a side note the developer is waiting approval on his account to BYOAC forums, but once approved any more specific questions can be answered regarding the technical aspect of Rad Kade. If there is enough interest the Rad Kade the project will be kept alive and any features or request that are feasible will be implemented. For example, if there is enough interest in Rad Kade a planned feature that has been heavily  thought of is incorporating MAMEHub to allow users to play MAME, NES, SNES, Genesis, and any other system supported by MAMEHub live at the same time with each other!

Why don't we have screenshots in this thread? Save me the time of a video.
