CPWizard with MaLa, loading before game only shows default CP layout

I've got controls.ini working and have CPWizard set to show the control panel how I want, and when I test various games via the preview in CPWizard it's working. I'm trying to load the CP layout upon game launch for 5 seconds, but when I do this it only shows the default, non game-specific layout. If I pull up the CPWizard menu after a game loads then it works fine. I've tried a bunch of command line options for CPWizard in the MaLa control panel viewer options, here is my current command line setting:

-game -mode layout -show -timeout 5000

I guess it doesn't "know" what game I have selected in MaLa until after the game has loaded. How can I get it to show the game specific layout when I launch a game?

You're right. CPWizard is missing the value for -game parameter.

Try like this:
-game %rom% -mode layout -show -timeout 5000

Alternatively you can use %parent% instead of %rom%.

That was it, thanks! Is there a way to make CPWizard load more quickly? There is at least a 3-4 second delay from presing start until when the CP layout loads. It is running in resident mode. I tried standalone mode and that made the wait time even worse, expectedly.

Start CPWizard first, before MALA or on MALA startup using the launcher plugin.
Then when you call CPWizard from MALA it should show quicker.

Make sure the option to show CPWizard on Mame start is not selected, in CPWizard options.
